Abstract:

MVS mainframe computer systems employ the ICF (Integrated Catalog Facility) catalog environment to manage numerous data sets. To provide 24×7 availability of those data sets, the BCS () must be re-organized while leaving the catalog open to access by applications. To perform a re-org while open, a data CI correlation table () is constructed () and used to lay the data CIs into a backup file in logical order (), so that they can be loaded into the new BCS () without sorting, thereby reducing downtime. Additionally, if the BCS is damaged during normal operation, repair of the structure must also be performed to ensure that correct access is maintained to all data that is cataloged in the BCS. Throughout the re-org process, structural integrity checks are performed on the data and index component of the BCS, and if errors are encountered, they can be repaired.

Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for non-disruptive encoding of source data in a source data set migrated to a target data set. The source data in the source data set is migrated to a target data set by encoding the source data to produce encoded source data to copy to a target data set. In response to receiving write data for the source data set, the write data is encoded to produce encoded write data to copy to the target data set. Input/Output (“I/O”) requests to the source data set are redirected to the target data set having encoded data for the source data set.

Abstract:

A method, system, and computer program product for migrating data across storages with dissimilar allocation sizes are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A determination is made of a minimum allocation unit size used for allocating space to a data at a source data storage device. A number of first minimum allocation units of a first minimum allocation unit size at a target data storage device is computed, wherein the number of first minimum allocation units can be completely occupied by a portion of the data. An amount of data left over after excluding the portion of the data from the data is computed. The portion of the data is migrated to the number of first minimum allocation units at the target. The amount of data left over is migrated to a second number of second minimum allocation units of a second minimum allocation unit size at the target.
