Abstract:

A method and system for collecting and distributing vehicle traffic congestion information is disclosed. The method and system optionally involves deploying probe vehicles or other data sources for collecting and transmitting detailed traffic information which describes vehicle speeds actually being experienced along the routes of interest and transmitting all this information into a central computer at a central traffic data station, where the data are processed.

Abstract:

The invention is a software upgradable network access control system which is preferably resident within a host computer. Preferably, the network access control card is operatively coupled to an expansion card resident within the host computer. In operation, the network access control system controls the flow of data packets to and from a host computer to a network. The host computer may be networked to a network device located on a trusted private network or on an untrusted network. The network access control system includes a dedicated processor, support memory, a first network connection and a second network connection. Preferably, a housing is provided for the network access control system so that it is received by an expansion slot within the host computer. The memory stores an operating system and a set of rules which controls a plurality of data packets which are communicated to and from the network access control system. The data packets communicated to and from the network access control system are controlled by accepting, denying or rejecting data packets. The processor compares received data packets with the set of rules which accept, deny or reject data packets. The first network connection within the housing is configured to enable communications from the processor to the host computer. The second network connection enables communications with a networked device operating in the trusted private network or the untrusted network. Each network access control system may be configured with a different set of rules.

Abstract:

A variable power resistor includes a heat sink having a front face and a back face with an electrically insulating, thermally conductive ceramic coating bonded directly onto the front face such that the ceramic coating is in direct thermal contact with the heat sink. A plurality of discrete thick film conductive circuit pads are positioned on the electrically insulating, thermally conductive ceramic coating and a thick film resistive layer is positioned over portions of the conductive circuit pads such that the pads are electrically connected in series. The variable power resistor also includes a moveable contactor capable of contacting the circuit pads in order to vary the resistance of the resistor and an electrical connection between the resistor and an electrical circuit. The electrically insulating, thermally conductive ceramic coating may be plasma sprayed onto the heat sink, while the resistive circuit may be screen printed onto the ceramic coating.

Abstract:

A method of trimming a resistance element is disclosed which comprises cutting transversely into one side of the element until the measured total resistance of the element increases by a fraction 1/N of a fixed percentage of a desired total resistance value. The fraction 1/N is approximately equal to the path length of the resistance element divided by the designed width of the transverse cut and the fixed percentage is equal to the percent deviation of the initial total resistance of the element from a nominal, desired resistance value. After the transverse cut is made, a longitudinal-type cut is made at a distance, equal to the length of the transverse cut, from the edge of the element having the transverse cut to isolate a portion of the element from the remainder of the element so that the isolated portion has the desired total resistance. This method is particularly suitable for use with computer controlled laser trimming systems used to mass produce resistance elements.
