Abstract:

A method of treating pneumonia in a subject in need of such treatment is disclosed. The method comprises orally administering to the subject a bis-benzamidoxime, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, that is reduced in the subject to produce a benzamidine having anti- activity. The method of the present invention may alternatively comprise intravenously administering to the subject an active compound as disclosed herein. Pharmaceutical formulations and active compounds useful in the practice of the present invention are also disclosed.

Abstract:

Pentamidine and analogs thereof have activity as imidazoline receptor binding compounds. A method of binding the imidazoline receptor, comprises contacting a bis-benzene to said imidazoline receptor in an amount effective to bind to said receptor, wherein said bis-benzene contains at least one amidine group (e. g. , one or two). The contacting step may be carried out in vivo or in vitro. Contacting may be carried out with individual active compounds or with libraries of active compounds.

Abstract:

Disclosed is a method of inhibiting retroviral integrase in a subject in need of such treatment. The method comprises administering to the subject an effective retroviral integrase inhibiting amount of a bis-benzimidazole compound such as bis[5-amidino-2-benzimidazolyl]methane, 1,2-bis[5-amidino-2-benzimidazolyl]ethane, 1,2-bis[5-amidino-2-benzimidazolyl]ethene or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. A method for combatting retroviral infections is also disclosed.

Novel dicationic 3,5-diphenylisoxazole compounds are described. Synthetic routes to these novel compounds are provided. Several of the compounds displayed in vitro activity versus and comparable to that of furamidine. A majority of the novel compounds also were less toxic to VERO cells than furamidine.
