Abstract:

A system for heating fluid in an internal combustion engine. The system includes a portable universal battery pack having an output voltage of a specified voltage rating. Additionally, the system includes a receiving unit that is adapted to removably receive the battery pack and transfer power from the battery pack to an immersion heater. The immersion heater includes a heating element that is at least partially immersed in the fluid. Power from the battery pack is utilized by the heater to heat the heating element, thereby heating the fluid in the engine. The system is adapted to readily use any number of different battery packs from a related line of battery packs, wherein that the various battery packs can have different output voltages.

Abstract:

An electrical machine comprises a rotor without windings, a stator having an armature winding and a field winding for generating a magnetomotive force in a direction extending transversely of the magnetomotive force generated by the armature winding. An electronic circuit is provided for controlling the current in the armature winding such that periods in which a magnetomotive force in one direction is associated with a first current pulse alternate with periods in which a magnetomotive force in the opposite direction is associated with a second current pulse. A position sensor is provided for monitoring the rotational position of the rotor and for supplying output signals at a rate dependent on the speed of rotation of the rotor. Furthermore a control system supplies control signals to the circuit to control the current in the armature winding in response to the output signals. The control system uses a control signal of extended duration at the beginning of the first current pulse on start-up of the motor from rest as compared with the duration of the control signals produced over the remainder of the first current pulse during acceleration of the rotor.

Abstract:

An electrical motor or generator comprises a rotor without windings, a stator having armature windings comprising at least two coils A , A having active portions positioned within armature winding slots in a stator iron, and field windings F having active portions positioned within field winding slots in the stator iron. An electronic control circuit is provided for controlling the currents in the coils A , A in synchronism with rotation of the rotor such that periods in which a magnetomotive force is generated in one direction by current flow in one of the coils alternate with periods in which a magnetomotive force is generated in the opposite direction by current flow in another of the coils. The armature winding slots and the field winding slots are equal in number and alternate with one another in the stator iron. Furthermore, considering the width of each slot as being the maximum extent of the slot in the direction of rotation of the rotor and considering the depth of each slot as being the maximum extent of the slot radially of the rotor and the thickness of the back iron behind the slot as being the distance between the maximum extent of the slot and the maximum extent of the armature iron along the same radial direction, the width of each armature slot is greater than the width of each field winding slot and the thickness of the back iron behind each armature winding slot is greater than the thickness of the back iron behind each field winding slot.

Abstract:

Abstract:

A system and method for reducing the cost of producing a brushless DC motor is presented. The brushless DC motor provides higher power density and efficiency with an increased tool run time. The brushless DC motor includes a rotor assembly that has an unmagnetized permanent magnet affixed to a shaft. The permanent magnet remains unmagnetized until the motor is partially assembled. A plurality of coils for producing a magnetic field are wound about the rotor assembly. The coils include end turns that enclose the rotor assembly such that the rotor assembly is not removable. Since the windings are wound with the rotor assembly already enclosed, the windings do not require large end coils to allow subsequent insertion of the rotor. Minimizing the end coils reduces the length of wire required per turn, thereby reducing the resistance of the winding. Also, since the permanent magnet is unmagnetized when the coils are wound around the rotor assembly the winding process is simplified by not coupling energy into the wire which would influence the winder operation.

Abstract:

An armature for a brush commutated electric motor having a distributed coil winding arrangement for reducing brush arcing and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The winding pattern involves winding a first coil into a first pair of slots of the armature. A second coil having a first subcoil portion is then wound into the same slots as the first coil, while a second subcoil portion of the second coil is wound into a pair of slots that is offset by one slot position from the first pair of slots. The two subcoil portions have the same number of turns, and the total turns of the two subcoil portions equals the number of turns of the first coil. A third coil is then wound in the same slots as the second subcoil portion of the second coil. The third coil has the same number of turns as the first coil. This pattern is repeated around the armature.

This invention relates to efficiently regenerating catalyst particles by minimizing the formation of localized “hot spots” and “cold spots” in a regeneration zone. In one embodiment, the invention includes mixing spent catalyst from a reactor and cold catalyst from a catalyst cooler in a mixing zone and directing the mixed catalyst to the regeneration zone in a fluidized manner with a fluidizing medium.
