Abstract:

A flexible infrared delivery apparatus useful for endoscopic infrared coagulating of human or animal blood and tissue or for other uses employs a source of infrared radiation which is not a laser and an elongated flexible fiber optic member which transmits radiation from the source to a contact portion at a distal end of the member and to a material such as human or animal tissue proximate the contact portion. The elongated member has an outer diameter which enables it to be inserted into and through an accessory channel of an endoscope to view the human or animal tissue or material to be treated with infrared radiation. A connector on the proximal end of the member allows the elongated member to be quickly connected to and disconnected from the apparatus where the member is aligned for receiving infrared radiation from the source. The contact portion defines a size, direction and shape of a radiation delivery area from the member to the human or animal tissue or material proximate the contact portion.

Abstract:

A brake pad assembly is provided, including a friction lining providing a wear surface for contacting a brake rotor and a back plate coupled to the friction lining. The back plate is made of a carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite. In one example, a majority of the carbon fibers of the back plate are oriented in a x-y in-plane direction resulting in a structure where the thermal conductivity is at least 2 times greater in the x-y in-plane direction versus a z through-plane direction. In another example, the back plate is provided as at least one sheet of a carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite. A method of manufacturing the brake pad assembly is also provided.

Abstract:

A computer user interface includes a system and methods to provide a control hierarchy, control marking, a hybrid grammar, and resized and/or repositioned dialog boxes. Control hierarchy divides controls, assigns each control a label, displays the labels according to a design hierarchy, and operates on the controls according to a functional hierarchy. Control marking distinguishes controls, via addition of graphic elements or changes in labels--referred to as glyphs. Hybrid grammar simultaneously allows a user to specify operations and data objects in a noun verb relationship or verb noun relationship. Finally, resized and/or repositioned dialog boxes enable a user to select a control that requires selection of data objects that are possibly obscured by the dialog box.

Abstract:

Protective coatings, such as paints and liquid formulations therefor, containing a masked chromogen which signals contact with a body fluid when the protective coating is masticated or ingested are disclosed. The chromogen is capable of producing a contrasting color when masticated and/or ingested, thereby signaling that the individual who masticated and/or ingested the chromogen may have ingested an undesirable or hazardous substance, e. g. , a lead-based paint, that has been covered by the protective coating. The chromogen is substantially indiscernible in the paint and converts by reaction with an activator substance, e. g. , by reaction with saliva, gastric juices, or the like, to a colored form which then stains the body fluids and/or the body tissues, and which may also stain the original source of the undesirable substance. The chromogen may be a leuco base or a color base of a dye, or it may be a color indicator substance or a reagent specific to the undesirable or hazardous substance or to a body fluid component. Preferably the chromogen is present in the form of pressure-rupturable microcapsules that release the chromogen when masticated.
