A system and method for creating a ring tone for an electronic device takes as input a phrase sung in a human voice and transforms it into a control signal controlling, for example, a ringer on a cellular telephone. Time-varying features of the input signal are analyzed to segment the signal into a set of discrete notes and assigning to each note a chromatic pitch value. The set of note start and stop times and pitches are then translated into a format suitable for controlling the device.

Abstract:

An analysis and synthesis system for sound is provided that can independently modify characteristics of audio signals such as pitch, duration, and timbre. High-quality pitch-scaling and time-scaling are achieved by using a technique for sinusoidal phase compensation adapted to a sinusoidal representation. Such signal modification systems can avoid the usual problems associated with interpolation-based re-sampling so that the pitch-scaling factor and the time-scaling factor can be varied independently, arbitrarily, and continuously. In the context of voice modification, the sinusoidal representation provides a means with which to separate the acoustic contributions of the vocal excitation and the vocal tract, which can enable independent timbre modification of the voice by altering only the vocal tract contributions. The system can be applied to efficiently encode the pitch in sinusoidal models by compensating for pitch quantization errors. The system can also be applied to non-speech signals such as music.

Abstract:

An approach for delivering encoded content data to a portable device is described. The content data is encoded to form encoded content data. The instruction data is combined with the encoded content data to generate a data stream that is able to be recognized by a target operating environment as executable. The data stream is delivered to a portable device capable of running the target operating environment. A program, included in the instruction data, is executed in the target operating environment on the portable device to initiate decoding of the encoded content data based decoding instructions included in the instruction data. The decoded content data is presented on the portable device.

Abstract:

A method for configuring a communication protocol between a client and a server is described. The method comprises, for each of a plurality of potential requests from the client to the server, estimating values for a plurality of attributes associated with the request, and computing a resource usage estimate, based on a plurality of the estimated attributes, that represents resources used by at least one of the client and the server in response to the request. The method also comprises determining at least one group of two or more requests to combine into a combined request based on the respective resource usage estimates for the requests to be combined, and determining whether to combine another group of requests based at least in part on a performance measure that characterizes performance of the configured communication protocol.
