Abstract:

A selective call system is provided in which string searching or text matching operations are performed on data from data generating devices such as condition sensors in a security system. When a predetermined string is identified, an address of a selective call receiver such as a pager is generated and that receiver is called. The invention is applicable to other applications where data is generated which includes predetermined character strings.

Abstract:

A central controller operating as a pager terminal for receiving, handling, and transmitting messages is shown that adaptively alters its message handling characteristics in order to improve the overall throughput of the central controller. The channel loading characteristics, based upon the time of day, are used in order to vary the limitation of the size of message received by the central controller as well as vary the transmission size and age of messages prior to transmission. Additionally, channel loading may be determined by determining the total size of messages within the central controller. In response to the total size determination, the limitation of the message size received by the controller may be varied. Furthermore, the transmission size and age of messages prior to transmission may be varied in response to the total size determination. The central controller may also adopt these operations in response to the combination of the total size determination and channel loading based upon the time of day characteristics.

Abstract:

A simulcast transmitter apparatus having automatic synchronization capability is disclosed which utilizes a signal readily available from any one of a number of available master timing sources to maintain a constant, uniform time delay to the transmitter via its interconnect link, even though the time delay corresponding to this interconnect link is susceptible to variation. Each interconnect link may consist of a phone line or other radio link which exhibits a relatively fixed, but unstable, delay. Each base station includes at least a transmitter and an adaptive-delay device which operates as a remotely-adjustable delay network upon receipt of a resync signal from a central controller to readjust and automatically maintain a uniform amount of time delay to each transmitter in the base stations. A master timing signal receiver, such as a suitable radio navigation receiver, is coupled to a suitable fixed delay network and provides the reference sync signal for each remotely-sited base station throughout the designated geographical area. This transmitter is therefore able to be compensated for varying amounts of delay caused by utilizing alternate links which may be necessary to maintain system reliability while overcoming inclement weather, interference, or other equipment difficulties.

Abstract:

A wireless communication system (WCS) comprises a plurality of portable communication units (PCUs) (109) each PCU having a telephone number for receiving incoming calls. The WCS is coupled to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (106), and has a plurality of locations (102) defined by radio coverage of a plurality of fixed communication units (FCUs) (108) at each location. The FCUs (108) are coupled to the PSTN, each FCU having at least one transceiver channel, and each transceiver channel having a telephone access number. The WCS further comprises a routing controller (RC) (104) for routing (514) incoming calls for PCUs, a location database (116) for storing (408) information used in the routing, and a plurality of location controllers (LCs) (110) each assigned an identification. Abstract:

A communication system is described which provides call queueing between a base station (400) which does not have a control channel and a plurality of portable communication handsets (401). The base station (400) determines when all channels are busy, and following one becoming available, transmits a first predetermined code. All portable communication handsets (401) which attempted to communicate with the base station (400) when all channels were busy, sets a queue mode flag, and starts a timer (455, 461). When a first predetermined code is detected by any handset (401) having attempted to establish communication with the base station (400), the first timer (455, 461) continues, and a second timer (455, 461) operating at a second rate is started at the value established by the first timer (455, 461). When the second timer (455, 461) value reaches a predetermined value, the handset (401) proceeds to attempt to establish communication with the base station (400) on the channel that became available.

A method and apparatus completes inbound calls for portable communication units (120) in a wireless communication system comprising portable communication units (120) and fixed communication units (102). The fixed communication unit (102) provides wireless communications over a limited coverage area (108, 110, 112) and provides coupling to a telephone system (114). The fixed communication unit (102) has at least one wireless transmission channel carrying call set-up signaling in a first mode and user communications in a second mode. The method includes in the fixed communication unit (102) the step of generating (708) more than one sequence of periodic call set-up polls on a wireless transmission channel for polling a portable communication unit (120) having an inbound call. The sequence coexists with other sequences of periodic call set-up polls being generated concurrently on the same wireless transmission channel.
