Abstract:
A wireless communication system (WCS) comprises a plurality of portable communication units (PCUs) (109) each PCU having a telephone number for receiving incoming calls. The WCS is coupled to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (106), and has a plurality of locations (102) defined by radio coverage of a plurality of fixed communication units (FCUs) (108) at each location. The FCUs (108) are coupled to the PSTN, each FCU having at least one transceiver channel, and each transceiver channel having a telephone access number. The WCS further comprises a routing controller (RC) (104) for routing (514) incoming calls for PCUs, a location database (116) for storing (408) information used in the routing, and a plurality of location controllers (LCs) (110) each assigned an identification. One LC is at each location and is coupled to the FCUs thereat. The LCs communicate (304, 602, 604) with the RC and control (610, 612) the FCUs in response to messages (410, 412, 510) from the RC.

Abstract:
A communication system is described which provides call queueing between a base station (400) which does not have a control channel and a plurality of portable communication handsets (401). The base station (400) determines when all channels are busy, and following one becoming available, transmits a first predetermined code. All portable communication handsets (401) which attempted to communicate with the base station (400) when all channels were busy, sets a queue mode flag, and starts a timer (455, 461). When a first predetermined code is detected by any handset (401) having attempted to establish communication with the base station (400), the first timer (455, 461) continues, and a second timer (455, 461) operating at a second rate is started at the value established by the first timer (455, 461). When the second timer (455, 461) value reaches a predetermined value, the handset (401) proceeds to attempt to establish communication with the base station (400) on the channel that became available.

Abstract:
A personal communication system (10) comprises transceiver stations (12, 14, 16, 18) providing communication capability between one or more portable radiotelephones (20, 22, 24) and a telephone network (30). One or more of the transceiver stations (12, 14, 16, 18) is further capable of storing a data base and of transmitting the same in response to a request for such transmission being received from a portable radiotelephone (20, 22, or 24) communicating therewith. The portable radiotelephone (20, 22, or 24) communicating therewith is capable thereafter of receiving the data base and of presenting at least a portion of the same to the radiotelephone subscriber.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus completes inbound calls for portable communication units (120) in a wireless communication system comprising portable communication units (120) and fixed communication units (102). The fixed communication unit (102) provides wireless communications over a limited coverage area (108, 110, 112) and provides coupling to a telephone system (114). The fixed communication unit (102) has at least one wireless transmission channel carrying call set-up signaling in a first mode and user communications in a second mode. The method includes in the fixed communication unit (102) the step of generating (708) more than one sequence of periodic call set-up polls on a wireless transmission channel for polling a portable communication unit (120) having an inbound call. The sequence coexists with other sequences of periodic call set-up polls being generated concurrently on the same wireless transmission channel.

Abstract:
A method of handling a charge authorization in a cordless phone (12) is provided wherein a memory (53) in the cordless phone (12) is credited (634) by a value representing a purchased amount prior to a usage of the cordless phone (12). The usage of the cordless phone is allowed (420) depending on that value which is debited (522) during the usage of the cordless phone.

Abstract:
Communication between first (38, 40 or 42) and second (38, 40 or 42) portable radiotelephone transceivers is provided in a radiotelephone communication system by generating a paging message (500-512) in response to the first transceiver (38, 40 or 42) registering with a first telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36). The paging message (500-512) is directed to the second transceiver (38, 40 or 42) for which communication is requested, and identifies the first telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36) and the first transceiver (38, 40 or 42). Upon receiving the paging message (500-512), the second transceiver (38, 40 or 42) registers with a second telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36), downloading the information identifying the first telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36) and the first transceiver (38, 40 or 42). The second telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36) establishes communication with the first telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36), after which the first telepoint base station (32, 34 or 36) requests registration of the first transceiver (38, 40 or 42) to complete the communication between first (38, 40 or 42) and second (38, 40 or 42) transceivers.
Method And Apparatus In A Communication System For Completing An Inbound Call
A method and apparatus for completing an inbound call from a telephone system to a portable communication unit (104) operating in a communication system comprising a base station (102) coupled to the telephone system (106, 124). The telephone system (106, 124) can complete the inbound call by different procedures requiring differing responses. The portable (104) receives (502) a selective call message (400) comprising a Call-Type Identifier (402) and a Call-Completion Number (412, 414, 416), and then transmits (520, 522, 524) to the base (102) the Call-Completion Number (412, 414, 416) and a Call-Type Code corresponding to the received Call-Type Identifier (402). The base (102) originates (606, 624) a call to the telephone system (106, 124) in accordance with the Call-Completion Number (412, 414, 416) and the Call-Type Code, and then completes the inbound call according to the Call-Type Code.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus in a data communication receiver (100) for diversity reception of a radio signal including a predictably repetitive, predetermined data bit pattern (304) comprises a processor (114) controlling (600) an antenna switch (106) to select between a first antenna feed (102) and a second antenna feed (104) as a momentary source of the radio signal during transmissions of the predetermined data bit pattern (304). The radio signal received from the momentary source is monitored by a data receiver (110) during the transmission of the predetermined bit pattern (304) to derive the data therefrom, and at least one bit error count is determined (604, 610) by the processor (114). After completion of the predetermined bit pattern (304), an antenna feed (102, 104) for the radio signal is selected (616, 620) in response to the at least one bit error count.
