Abstract:

An electro-optic device comprising an electro-optic crystal substrate, an optical waveguide path in the crystal adjacent the substrate surface and an electrode spaced from the surface by a buffer layer is provided with enhanced operating stability by forming the buffer layer of a transparent electronically conductive material. Preferred buffer materials are electronically conductive gallium-indium-oxide and electronically conductive zinc-indium-tin-oxide.

Abstract:

A dielectric layer consisting essentially of Ta, Al, oxygen and nitrogen can have advantageous properties that make such a layer useful for thin film capacitors, typically capacitors for Si integrated circuits. For instance, a significantly greater fraction of capacitors according to the invention than of prior art tantalum oxide capacitors can store a charge of 3. mu. coulomb/cm. sup. 2. In a currently preferred embodiment, the dielectric layer has composition Ta. sub. 1-y Al. sub. y O. sub. x N. sub. z, with y. about. 1, x. about. 2. 4, and z. about. 02. The dielectric layer can be formed by sputter deposition or any other appropriate deposition technique, e. g. , chemical vapor deposition.

Abstract:

A reflector assembly is provided for mounting on a spoked wheel such as, for example, a bicycle wheel. The assembly comprises a plate-like reflector and a fastener apparatus for securing the reflector to the wheel. The reflector includes a central aperture extending through the thickness of the reflector and a transversely extending groove on one side of the reflector which intersects the central aperture. The reflector is mounted on and secured to a spoke received within the transversely extending groove by the fastener apparatus which includes a fastening element and a binding screw, each of which are inserted into the central aperture from opposite ends thereof and, upon engagement of the fastening element and the binding screw, serve to secure the reflector to the spoke.

Abstract:

Documents are encoded with at least one thin, transparent coating, normally invisible, but having a readily detectable physical characteristic such as, electrical conductivity, electrical impedance, electrical capacitance, electroluminescence. Each document consists of a substrate on which is applied (1) at least one of the thin coatings, and (2) conventional printing, preferably intaglio. The thin coating may be applied before or after the printing. The coating includes particles driven into the surface to a substantial depth. The uncoated substrate is free of the detectable physical characteristic. The coating is confined to a limited area of the substrate surface and itself constitutes a code or is laid down in a pattern for identification. A second coating can be applied so that all areas of the surface have the same appearance to mask visual detection of the first coating. The first coating can be of such a nature as to defeat electrostatic copying, particular, color copying, by effecting a discernible difference between the original and the copy.

Abstract:

A battery separator includes a porous substrate and a thermal fuse material adhered to at least one surface of said porous substrate. The thermal fuse material is adhered to the substrate surface in a predetermined geometric array thereupon so as to establish open areas of the at least one substrate surface to thereby allow ionic migration therethrough. The thermal fuse material forming the geometric array on the substrate surface may itself define open pores to further facilitate such ionic migration. The thermal fuse material melts at or near a predetermined threshold temperature so that the substrate's permeability irreversibly becomes significantly decreased and thus interrupts the chemical reaction in an electrochemical battery. In such a manner, batteries of improved safety may be provided using the separators of this invention.
