Abstract:

An annular fluid or packer fluid, and methods of making the same, that includes a water-miscible solvent, a viscosifying additive, a crosslinking agent, a crosslinking inhibitor having the facility to inhibit crosslinking between the viscosifying additive and the crosslinking agent, and an initiating agent having the facility to overcome an action of the crosslinking inhibitor and to initiate crosslinking between the viscosifying additive and the crosslinking agent, is shown and described. The fluid has a thermal conductivity of no more than about 0. 25 btu/(hrft F. ) and a potential to substantially increase its viscosity upon sitting for a selected period of time.

Abstract:

A method of injection of a higher density fluid into the top of the annulus of a well while lower density fluid is withdrawn from the top of the annulus of the well, wherein the higher density fluid has a composition such that it will drop through the lower density fluid without dispersing therein, thus flowing into the deeper reaches of the annulus and not short circuiting through the top of the annulus to the point from which the lower density fluid is intended to be withdrawn. A method of injection of a higher density fluid into the top of the annulus of a well without simultaneously withdrawing a lower density fluid from the top of the annulus of the well, wherein the higher density fluid has a composition such that it will drop through the lower density fluid without dispersing therein, thus flowing into the deeper reaches of the annulus so that when the pressure induced in the annulus as a result of this injection is subsequently bled off, principally the lower density fluid will be that which is withdrawn.

Abstract:

A process to substantially reduce fluid loss in which an appropriate amount of a non-flowing gel of sufficient strength is emplaced to substantially eliminate or reduce loss of the drilling fluid. The gel composition of the process includes: (1) a non-cellulose containing copolymer having vinyl phosphonate co-monomer units which may be incorporated into the polymer by copolymerization with the other co-monomer(s) comprising the polymer or by grafting upon an already existing polymer or co-polymer, (2) a crosslinking agent active upon the phosphonate groups, (3) a crosslinking initiator comprising a Bronsted Lowry base or Lewis base and (4) an aqueous solvent.

A packer or annular fluid includes a hydrocarbon fluid; and a gelling agent; wherein the packer fluid is a yield power law fluid. A method for preparing a packer fluid includes preparing a mixture of a hydrocarbon fluid, and a gelling agent; heating the mixture to a selected temperature; and shearing the mixture.
