Abstract:

A rendering method involves heating the animal protein and thereafter feeding the heated animal protein through a rendering screw press machine having an internal shaft assembly that includes a working portion with an overall compression ratio of greater than about 7 to 1, a first scroll flight section configured for decreasing cake thickness, followed by a first high compression cone section, followed by a stepped decompression section, followed by a second scroll flight section configured for decreasing cake thickness, followed by a second high compression cone section, followed by a straight collar section. Rotating the shaft assembly moves the heated animal protein through the machine such that liquid fat passes out through a barrel cage and substantially dried animal protein cake is output from the choke opening, and the heated animal protein only undergoes one stepped decompression during such movement.

A desulfurization process wherein a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon material is contacted with a sulfur oxide compound and an amine, a salt of an amine, or mixtures thereof. The contacting converts the sulfur component of the hydrocarbon material to water soluble form thereby allowing the sulfur components to be readily separated by water washing.

Abstract:

Method and apparatus for interfacing a liquid chromatograph column and a mass spectrometer. The ions necessary for analysis by a mass spectrometer are provided by utilizing a conduit held at a high voltage potential to ionize at least a portion of the solute flowing out of the liquid chromatograph column. Chambers held at low pressure are utilized to evaporate substantially all of the un-ionized solvent present with the solute to provide an ion stream consisting essentially of ionized solvent and solute to the mass spectrometer. The mass of the ionized solute is then determined by the mass spectrometer, thus providing an analysis of the components eluted from the liquid chromatograph column.

A nitrogen base is separated from the sulfur-containing product of a gas phase reaction between a basic nitrogen compound and at least one of a hydrosulfide and sulfur dioxide by washing the product of the reaction, followed by basification and stripping of the wash liquid. Abstract:

A method for in situ processing of oil shale in which rubblized shale is removed from the retort and subsequently returned to the retort. A section of shale in a subterranean formation is first rubblized so as to form a retort chamber filled with rubble. The rubblized shale is then removed from the retort chamber, followed by crushing of the rubblized shale into shale particles of various sizes within an overall size range. Subsequent to the crushing step, the shale particles are separated according to size into a plurality of shale particle groups, each of which includes shale particles within a predetermined group size range. Each group size range makes up a portion of the overall size range. Substantially all of the shale particle groups are then sequentially reloaded into the retort chamber so that the particle groups are graded according to particle size within the chamber, wherein the largest particles are at bottom end of the chamber and the smallest particles are at the top end of the chamber. Retorting of the reloaded shale produces liquid hydrocarbon products which are removed from the retort chamber.

In a chromatographic analysis system, carrier fluid containing a sample fluid and pure carrier fluid are alternately supplied to both first and second fluid inlets of a chromatographic detector.
