Abstract:

An inventory management system utilizes unattended facilities remote from a central warehouse for service parts logistics. Items are placed in inventory in secure enclosures at the unattended facilities by the inventory management service or are delivered directly to the unattended facility. The unattended facilities may be located near one or more customers to reduce a service technician's travel time and customers' inventory costs. A service technician utilizes a passcode to retrieve needed items. The service technician may order items that are not kept in the inventory of the unattended facility in which case the items may be delivered to the unattended facility and the service technician may receive a notification related to all the items that comprise an order that the order is ready for pick up at an unattended facility. Unused, used or damaged parts may be returned by a technician to a remote secure enclosure where such returned parts may be retrieved and disposed of, repaired or placed back into inventory if not damaged or after repair, and the processing of such returned parts begins by information entered into a data entry device at the remote secure enclosure location. Return items that are not damaged may be included in the inventory of an unattended facility.

Abstract:

The present invention provides systems and methods of consolidating, shipping and distributing items comprising multiple orders to multiple customers. The orders are received by an inventory management service, filled and packaged at a centralized distribution center in fewer containers than there are orders. For instance, if there are N orders destined for a particular authorized outlet, then the N orders will be consolidated and shipped in at most N−1, or fewer, containers. However, each order is individually packaged, controlled, tracked and received as an individual order. The consolidated containers are shipped to an authorized outlet and the individual orders are distributed to the customers. Also provided are systems and methods for returning orders that are not picked up at the authorized outlet to a central location. The items may be, for example, service parts, wireless communication devices, etc.

Abstract:

An unattended distribution facility and an unattended returns facility are incorporated into or are proximate to an attended distribution and return facility operated by an inventory management service. The unattended distribution facility and unattended returns facility are accessible by customers at times when the attended distribution and return facility are unavailable or at times when long waits are required to receive or return items at the attended distribution and return facility because of the number of customers simultaneously trying to obtain or return items. An embodiment includes incorporating the unattended returns facility into the unattended distribution facility. An unattended distribution facility's electronic control system is integrated into an inventory management system used by the inventory management service so that the location of items placed in the unattended distribution facility may be monitored and information about the item may be updated when it is picked up by a customer.
