Abstract:In one aspect of the present invention, a solar receiver with an improved heat sink design will be described. The solar receiver includes a photovoltaic cell and a heat spreader plate having a frontside and an opposing backside. The photovoltaic cell is positioned on the frontside of the heat spreader plate. Multiple front and rear heat sink fins are attached to and extend out of the frontside and the backside of the heat spreader plate, respectively. In various implementations, the front heat sink fins are positioned adjacent to, above and below the photovoltaic cell.

Abstract:A novel class of cationic phospholipids and novel method for their synthesis are disclosed. The class of phospholipids comprises phosphotriester derivatives of phosphoglycerides and sphingolipids. It has been unexpectedly found that liposomes comprising one or more of these cationic phospholipids are effective in the lipofection of nucleic acids. These novel phospholipids are particularly attractive because of they are not only effective in lipofection, but are extremely cheap and easy to make.

Abstract:A launch vehicle payload housing and assembly joint for a launch vehicle, the housing comprising a shroud having first and second shell sections, and a frusto-conical payload adapter mounted in the shroud. The shell sections are connected together to form a housing. A peripherally extending explosive seam and a pair of longitudinally extending explosive seams hold the shell sections together. Each seam comprises a plurality of seam elements which include a pair of brackets attached to opposed ends of those parts of the shell abutting the longitudinally and peripherally extending seams. The brackets are spaced from one another to define a cavity. The cavity accommodates a deformable tube which houses explosive material in the form of an explosive cord. Detonation of the explosive material causes the shell sections to separate from one another. Longitudinally acting thrustor springs and transverse acting assistor springs urge the shell sections apart to pivot about hinges between the shell sections and a base ring.

Abstract:A television flaw detector, and process, for inspection of the wall surface of a hole through a circuit board. The circuit board is positioned on a support beneath a microscope, with the hole to be inspected aligned with the microscope. On the opposite side of the circuit board are an optical condenser and a light source. The condenser directs a divergent conical beam of light into the hole to illuminate the wall surface of the hole about its entire circumference and along its full length. A mask prevents non-reflected light rays from passing directly through the condenser and the hole into the microscope. A television camera mounted on the microscope is connected to a television monitor upon which it produces an image of a region of the wall surface of the hole extending from its full circumference at a selected position along its length.

Abstract:In a live-action theater, a catapult launches a prop which achieves free flight in the theater. The catapult and prop are concealed until the moment of launch, whereupon the prop suddenly hurtles into an audience's view, and lands in front of the audience. The audience views the launch from a seating area or from a vehicle moved through the theater. The prop is for example, a seaplane or a jetski. The prop is then retrieved from the landing area using a crane or other lifter and returned to the catapult for a subsequent launch. By launching a prop in a theater with a catapult, the audience sees true free flight, rather than an illusion of flight. The audience sees no supports or other devices which can diminish the effect. A catapult allows a prop to be launched directly at the audience at a realistic or full speed, creating a more dramatic effect than if a prop is moved about some distant stage area using cables or a boom.
