Abstract:

This invention provides a medical device for delivering volumetric quantities of a first and a second biochemically reactive fluid in which separate MBUs atomize the fluids. The device of the present invention includes a fluid delivery device for laparoscopically delivering fluids having two feed conduits for delivering fluid to feed ports of the mechanical breakup units, the mechanical breakup units having two feed ports for receiving fluid from the feed conduits and directing such fluid into spin chambers and funneling portions having a sloped sidewall for directing fluid from the spin chambers through an exit port. The device is suitably dimensioned for creating a spray of two fluids with different viscosities such as fibrinogen and thrombin in such a manner that the thrombin spray cone encompasses the fibrinogen spray cone at a distance of about one inch from the exit port with a 0. 5 cc/second flow rate to avoid depositing unreacted fibrinogen on a surface. Other instruments such as optical fibers may be incorporated within the device.

Abstract:

Reverse osmosis membranes with improved water flux and excellent solute rejection characteristics are formed by interfacial reaction of an essentially monomeric polyamine reactant having an average of at least two amine functional groups with an essentially monomeric amine-reactive reactant having an average of at least 2. 05 acyl halide functional groups, the polymerization reaction being conducted in the presence of a monohydric phenol on the surface of a porous substrate. A specific example is a high flux composite membrane prepared by coating a porous substrate with an aqueous solution containing about 0. 1-20 wt % m-phenylenediamine and 0. 1-9. 9 wt % phenol, and interfacially contacting the coated substrate with a nonaqueous solution of about 0. 01-10 wt % trimesoyl chloride for a time sufficient to form a polyamide coating, followed optionally by one or more washing and drying steps to remove the nonaqueous solvent and most or all of residual unreacted chemicals.

Abstract:

A furnace to contain molten zinc, molten aluminum, or other molten metal has an outer vessel, an inner vessel, and particulate matter packed therebetween so as to enable the inner vessel to be lifted readily from the outer vessel. Electrical conductors are imbedded in said matter and arranged to close an electrical circuit including a signalling means if bridged by any molten metal leaking from the inner vessel. The furnace is provided with a removable bonnet, a beam mounted across the inner vessel, and a partition mounted to and beneath the beam so as to extend into the molten metal deeply. The inner and outer vessels, the removable bonnet, and the beam are insulative. The partition is a good conductor of heat.
