Abstract:

A radiosurgery and radiotherapy system to provide diagnostic imaging and target localization via a patient 3-D mapping means such as a CT scanner or MRI, patient positioning via a four degree of freedom of motion table, and a stereotactic Cobalt 60 therapy unit incorporating multiple sources to therapeutically irradiate a target is provided. Methods of radiosurgery and radiotherapy utilizing the system are also provided. A combination of radiation source configuration, 360 degree rotational characteristics of the therapy unit, and table movement will allow any size and shape of target to be irradiated to therapeutic levels while decreasing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. A radiation beam catcher which captures greater than 80% and preferably greater than 90 percent of the radiation from the radiation sources is also provided.

Abstract:

An inflatable balloon capable of being delivered to a site within a body via a catheter or the like, includes on its surface a composition. The composition is capable of inducing the formation of a thrombosis followed by invasion of capillaries and fibroblasts to the thrombosis and subsequent scar formation. Scar formation fixedly adheres the balloon at its placement site to permanently locate the balloon at this placement site.

Abstract:

Induction heating can be utilized to cause necrosis of neoplasm as a result of hyperthermia by a process involving the injection of particles having hysteresis heating characteristics into tissue either within or in close proximity to the neoplasm and then subjecting these particles to an alternating magnetic field sufficient to cause hysteresis heating. The frequency of the field is preferably sufficiently low so as to minimize eddy current and dielectric heating. The particles used are preferably initially located within a biologically inert liquid carrier which will facilitate the insertion of the particles within the body and which will automatically become non-liquid within the body so as to hold the particles in place. The carrier may contain radiopaque material to enhance its visualization under radiographic examination. The actual heating is preferably carried out by positioning either the entire patient or the affected portion of the patient's body through a series of axially aligned, parallel, liquid cooled coils.
