Abstract:

Communications network architectures integrate communications using a geosynchronous satellite communications system including a geosynchronous communications satellite operating in the fixed satellite service (FSS) band and a low earth orbit satellite communications system including a plurality of low earth orbit communications satellites. A low earth orbit gateway having a terminal is used to communicate with the low earth orbit communications satellites using multiple access communication channels, and is used to communicate with a public switch telephone network. A geosynchronous gateway having a terminal is used to communicate with the geosynchronous communications satellite by overlaying multiple access communication channels onto fixed channel assignments and transmitting the overlayed channel assignments. The terminal in the geosynchronous gateway is also used to communicate with the public switch telephone network. A fixed terminal having a handset is used to selectively communicate with the low earth orbit communications satellite using the multiple access communication channels, and with the geosynchronous communications satellite by extracting the multiple access communication channels from the fixed channel assignments.

Abstract:

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for separating and/or analyzing fluids of interest. According to principles of the present invention, fluid analysis is accomplished with microfluidic devices and may be reported in real-time or near real-time in a subterranean environment. In addition or alternative to oilfield applications, the principles of the present invention contemplate separation in a laboratory or other environment for biological sample separation and analytical chemistry applications. The present invention is capable of separating liquid-liquid mixtures or emulsions in a microfluidic device without fouling.

Abstract:

A microfluidic system for performing fluid analysis is described having: (a) a submersible housing having a fluid analysis means and a power supply to provide power to said system; and (b) a substrate for receiving a fluid sample, having embedded therein a fluid sample inlet, a reagent inlet, a fluid sample outlet, and a mixing region in fluid communication with the fluid sample inlet, the reagent inlet, and the fluid sample outlet, and wherein the substrate includes a fluid drive means for moving the fluid sample through the substrate, and wherein the substrate interconnects with the housing. Abstract:

A system and method for providing quality of service and transponder utilization billing for use with a data broadcasting system. The data broadcast system includes a plurality of receivers coupled to a plurality of channel encoders, a multiplexer for multiplexing encoded channels, and a transmitter for transmitting the channels. A video system controller is coupled to the multiplexer and channel encoders. A content access management system schedules, tracks, and reports customer content, and a transponder management system outputs billing reports. In accordance with the present invention, the multiplexer generates statistical feedback to the encoders to control encoding quantization rates to achieve optimum channelized video throughput. The video system controller generates quality parametrics comprising average channel quantization rates that are indicative of the quality of each channel of the data broadcasting system. A quality of service and transponder utilization billing system generates schedule and utilization data for each channel of the data broadcasting system, matches average channel quantization rates are to preassigned class bins that represent pre-agreed quality of service levels for respective customers, periodically aligns the class bins to a customer's product schedule, and generates product and class utilization summary. The transponder management system processes the product and class utilization summary to track transponder usage and match each customer to a rate identifier table to periodically render an integrated customer bill reflecting quality of service delivered with content over time.

Abstract:

An articulated soft doll construction in which a soft skin covers a soft doll head and a soft skin covers a soft torso in which the head is universally moveable relative to the torso. The torso has a first skin cover covering a fiber filler material. The torso and first skin cover are formed with an opening in which a neck connecting member is received. A second soft skin cover is used to cover a soft head that is filled with fiber material. A neck plug is received through an opening in the head and second soft skin cover. Disposed inside a neck plug is a ball and socket assembly in which the ball is connected to a spindle member that extends into the torso and is received by the neck connecting member for engagement therewith. A collar member is received inside the neck plug for retaining the second soft skin cover around the head. A remaining member is received by the neck connecting member to retain the first soft skin cover.

Abstract:

A pump for use in a doll having a transparent front torso through which is viewed simulated internal organs, the pump being connected to coiled transparent tubing for passage therethrough of a liquid-air mixture. The pump has a main body portion with a generally cylindrical recess having a circular surface with a coaxial annular groove in the surface and an arcuate groove disposed radially outwardly from the annular groove. An inlet aperture is disposed radially outwardly from the annular groove and is in fluid communication therewith while an outlet aperture is in fluid communication with the arcuate groove with the two grooves being interconnected by a groove segment. A one-piece diaphragm is provided with a flange adapted to sealingly engage the surface, the diaphragm having a deformable dome-shaped portion extending outwardly from the surfce to form a chamber, the diaphragm having a skirt portion fitting within the annular groove with the skirt having a cutaway portion in proximity to the groove segment. The diaphragm flange is also provided with a tongue portion arcuate in cross section for abuttingly engaging a surface of the arcuate groove to provide a check valve between the groove segment and the outlet aperture. The skirt portion is so configured within the groove to act as an inlet check valve.

Abstract:

A base drive circuit for a power switching transistor in a power inverter circuit utilizes a center tapped current transformer winding to regeneratively couple the collector current of the power switching transistor to its base drive electrode. A first segment of the center tapped transformer winding is coupled via a control transistor to provide proportional base drive to the power transistors when it is biased into conduction. This forward drive mode continues until the control transistor is biased nonconducting, at which point, the second segment of the center tapped transformer winding is connected to the base drive electrode to provide a reverse drive current to the power transistor base to provide rapid turn-off and reset the transformer. A supplemental drive path coupled to a converter power source via a diode to the control transistor operates to supply additional drive current therethrough to the power transistor at the turn-on transition in order to eliminate the quasi-saturation region that normally exists in a regeneratively driven power switching transistor at turn-on.
