Abstract:Compliant substrates include a compliant single crystal layer formed on an amorphous buffer layer, which is formed on a single crystal base layer. The compliant single crystal layer can be used as a template to support the growth of one or more lattice mismatched layers on the compliant substrate. Various electronic and optoelectronic devices including, for example, photodetectors, long-wavelength semiconductor light-emitting devices, short-wavelength semiconductor light-emitting devices, optical modulators and transistors, can be formed on the compliant substrates. The compliant substrates can be produced by epitaxially forming an intermediate single crystal layer, that can be treated to convert it to an amorphous layer, between two single crystal layers, and treating the intermediate single crystal layer to form an amorphous buffer layer.

Abstract:Various aspects of multiple-channel light transmitting systems are disclosed. The system may include a multiple-wave length light source, a demultiplexer; a modulator, and a wavelocker. The wavelocker is configured to drive the light source such that said multiple wavelengths coincide with the ITU grid. The system may also include other elements including a locker or a mode-locking servo, where the servo is configured to adjust the mode locking method frequency to coincide with the spacing of the ITU grid. Further additional elements may include an optical amplifier or an equalizer. The equalizer may include a filter whose transmission function varies with wavelength.

Abstract:A multi-channel light source for use with a wavelength division multiplexed optical communication system includes a modified vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) including a gain region and a resonator reflector layer at a first end for coupling with an optical fiber. An optical or electrical pumping source excites a gain region of the laser. An external cavity couples at a second end of the modified VCSEL and has a mirrored end for forming a resonant cavity with the resonator reflector layer permitting the light source to produce a multi-channel optical signal. The modified VCSEL has a cavity length that is substantially extended compared with a conventional VCSEL.

Abstract:A control system architecture that allows a semiconductor laser to be stabilized with respect to critical parameters, such as output power and/or emission wavelength, with a reduced cost with respect to the components required to implement control, while simultaneously maintaining or increasing precision of the control function. This is achieved using sophisticated integrated circuitry contained within the laser package to measure data related to multiple laser operation parameters and to transmit these parameters to a control circuit. In particular, precision thermal measurements may be used to eliminate the need for optical detectors in the laser package. The invention described herein has significant utility for different types of semiconductor lasers, including both edge emitting and VCSEL-type semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:A semiconductor laser, such as a vertical cavity, surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is coupled to an optical fiber. The other end of the optical fiber has a reflector, so as to provide a fiber-extended cavity for the VCSEL. Such a construction is useful for providing modal stability to the VCSEL or for forming a mode-locked VCSEL. The optical fiber may be a graded index fiber. In such a case, the fiber length may be selected to have an integral number of quarter pitch lengths. The fiber may be doped with an excitable species and lies within a fiber laser cavity. A semiconductor laser may pump the fiber laser, yielding an emission wavelength beyond the scope of the conventional semiconductor laser.
