  • US Classification:
    493 81, 493 13, 493 17, 493147, 493 27
  • Abstract:
An apparatus adapted to be used for the automatic handling of sheets from which leaflets are formed and which includes a transfer unit for conveying sheets, an accumulator station disposed adjacent the transfer unit and being adapted to receive sheets from the transfer unit and to accumulate the sheets in a stack, a sensor associated with the accumulator station and being adapted to generate a signal indicative of whether the height of the stack of sheets in the accumulator station is at least equal to a minimum height, a sheet feeder adapted to periodically remove sheets from the stack of sheets at a substantially constant rate and a control mechanism operatively coupled to the sensor and the sheet feeder. The control mechanism is adapted to cause the sheet feeder to remove the sheets from the accumulator station as long as the height of the stack of sheets is at least the minimum height as determined by the sensor, and the control mechanism is adapted to cause the sheet feeder to cease removal of the sheets from the accumulator station if the height of the stack of sheets falls below the minimum height as determined by the sensor.

  • US Patent:
    50467107, Sep 10, 1991
  • Filed:
    Mar 23, 1989

  • International Classification:

  • US Classification:
    270 37
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for making a leaflet having fold lines and cross folds normal to the fold lines and with an adhesive adhering a lip portion of a long leg of the leaflet to a short leg of the leaflet to avoid leaving a loose edge on the leaflet. Sheets are conveyed in a first direction to a first folding at a first folding station, and then a second conveyor feeds the sheets to travel at right angles to a cross folder at a second folding station. The cross folds are made to a lip portion on a long leg and adhesive applicator applies adhesive to the lip portion which is adhered by the adhesive to a folded panel to form a leaflet having fold lines and cross folds at its edges, thereby eliminating any loose edges. Loose edges may open the leaflet during a high speed conveyance thereof.

  • Filed:
    May 10, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/192220
  • Inventors:
Robert Vijuk - Downers Grove IL
  • International Classification:
    B42C 100
  • US Classification:
    270 45
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for accumulating sheets into a stack and for folding the stack with at least two folds into a "C" or "Z" letter fold. A continuously traveling conveyor travels past a plurality of sheet feeding stations. A sheet is removed from each station simultaneously and these sheets are transferred to a position over the conveyor, and they are stacked directly onto the previously deposited sheets on the conveyor so that simultaneously a sheet is added to each stack at a location opposite each station. Such stack is conveyed to a folding knife which folds the stack off center and leaves a larger unfold portion. At a second folding station, a folding device folds a second fold parallel to the first fold to complete a letter fold for the entire stack of sheets which folded stack is then discharged.
