Abstract:
A method and system for efficient context switching are provided. An execution entity that is to be context switched out is allowed to continue executing for a predetermined period of time before being context switched out. During the predetermined period of time in which the execution entity continues to execute, the hardware or an operating system tracks and records its footprint such as the addresses and page and segment table entries and the like accessed by the continued execution. When the execution entity is being context switched back in, its page and segment table and cache states are reloaded for use in its immediate execution.

Abstract:
To dynamically update an operating system, a new factory object may have one or more new and/or updated object instances. A corresponding old factory object is then located and its version is checked for compatibility. A dynamic update procedure is then executed, which includes (a) changing a factory reference pointer within the operating system from the old factory object to the new factory object. For the case of updated object instances, (b) hot swapping each old object instance for its corresponding updated object instance, and (c) removing the old factory object. This may be performed for multiple updated object instances in the new factory object, preferably each separately. For the case of new object instances, they are created by the new factory and pointers established to invoke them. A single factory object may include multiple updated objects from a class, and/or new object instances from different classes, and the update may be performed without the need to reboot the operating system.

Abstract:
In an embodiment, a send thread receives an identifier that identifies a destination node and a pointer to data. The send thread creates a first send request in response to the receipt of the identifier and the data pointer. The send thread selects a selected channel from among a plurality of channels. The selected channel comprises a selected hand-off queue and an identification of a selected message unit. Each of the channels identifies a different message unit. The selected hand-off queue is randomly accessible. If the selected hand-off queue contains an available entry, the send thread adds the first send request to the selected hand-off queue. If the selected hand-off queue does not contain an available entry, the send thread removes a second send request from the selected hand-off queue and sends the second send request to the selected message unit.

Abstract:
In the context of screens, windows and like media, arrangements for automatically detecting when a recipient has entered or left a public setting so that privacy configuration changes can be automatically invoked. Also broadly contemplated herein is an arrangement for selectively displaying messages on the recipient's screen but deferring the messages from being visible on a remote hardware device or software display which is publicly visible. Furthermore, there is broadly contemplated herein a secure arrangement for revealing and responding to deferred messages. More generally, there is broadly contemplated herein a new approach to the provision of application notifications and to alarm control during a desktop screen sharing mode, based on the automatic detection of a screen sharing state and on notifying registered applications of the screen sharing in a unified, consistent manner.
