    view source
  • US Patent:
    20070146880, Jun 28, 2007
  • Filed:
    Dec 27, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/319833
  • Inventors:
William Bleha - Carlsbad CA, US
Rodney Sterling - Carlsbad CA, US
  • International Classification:
    G02B 27/22
  • US Classification:
    359468000, 359465000, 359498000
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to an optical device for splitting incident unpolarized white light into simultaneously spectrally separated and orthogonally polarized light beams having complementary primary color bands by using interference filters for primary color bands such as the Infitec filters. The optical device embodying the present invention can be used in, for example, illumination systems for passive stereoscopic 3D display systems. When used in the stereoscopic 3D display system, the present invention provides a high degree of spectral and polarization separation of the individual stereoscopic images and the increased efficiency in use of illumination light compared to the conventional stereoscopic projection systems.
  • Light Valve With Twisted Perpendicular Liquid Crystal With A Negative Dielectric Anisotropy

    view source
  • US Patent:
    53846508, Jan 24, 1995
  • Filed:
    Apr 6, 1992
  • Appl. No.:
    7/863659
  • Inventors:
Robert D. TeKolste - San Diego CA
Rodney D. Sterling - Carlsbad CA
  • Assignee:
Hughes Aircraft Company - Los Angeles CA
  • International Classification:
    G02F 11337
    G02F 11335
    G02F 113
  • US Classification:
    359 77
  • Abstract:
A liquid crystal light valve projection system is provided with increased optical overshoot, and thereby decreased optical response time, by employing a liquid crystal mixture (52) having molecules substantially perpendicularly aligned to the face of the liquid crystal light valve electrodes (42,70) and axially twisted. The axial twist of the liquid crystal molecules is provided by laying down alignment grooves (90,92,96,98) for the liquid crystal mixture that are oriented with respect to one another, on the opposite alignment layers, by an angle of between about 45. degree. and 90. degree. This mutually angled orientation of the opposed alignment grooves on the opposed alignment layers causes optical overshoot of the system to vary when the entire liquid crystal cell (34) is rotated relative to the output polarizer (18) about an axis perpendicular to the output face of the cell. This rotation of the cell (34) of twisted perpendicular liquid crystal relative to the output polarizer (18) allows a faster optical rise time to be achieved.
  • Automatic Shading In An Lclv Projector

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60611022, May 9, 2000
  • Filed:
    Oct 10, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/949105
  • Inventors:
John P. Sheppard - Valley Center CA
Rodney D. Sterling - Carlsbad CA
Graeme D. Gow - Carlsbad CA
John J. Lyon - San Marcos CA
  • Assignee:
Hughes-JVC Technology Corporation - Carlsbad CA
  • International Classification:
    H04N 3223
    H04N 928
  • US Classification:
    348745
  • Abstract:
A process for implementing shading corrections in a video projector. The process selects a color to be shaded, and then sets a projector video level at a selected high video level. A target brightness map is then generated for each of a plurality of preselected shading correction application points at the selected high video level. The process sets the projector video level at a selected low video level, and generates a target brightness map for each of the plurality of shading correction application points at the low video level. Actual light levels are then measured at both the high and low video levels for each shading correction application point, and differences between the target and measured brightness values are minimized. The shading process of the present invention is automatically preformed during projector set-up, and thereby eliminates the inherent subjective and time consuming need for conventional manual shading processes.
  • Silicon Dioxide Bonding Layers And Method

    view source
  • US Patent:
    54417767, Aug 15, 1995
  • Filed:
    Nov 8, 1993
  • Appl. No.:
    8/149195
  • Inventors:
Rodney D. Sterling - Carlsbad CA
Yu-Tai Lee - San Diego CA
  • International Classification:
    G02F 1135
  • US Classification:
    428 1
  • Abstract:
A liquid crystal light valve that has an indium tin oxide (ITO) primary electrode disposed between two silicon dioxide bonding layers. The first bonding layer for bonding the primary electrode to a glass substrate and the second bonding layer for bonding said primary electrode to a hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer. The ITO primary electrode is sputtered which significantly reduces processing time and the silicon dioxide bonding layers allow the primary electrode to be bonded to the glass substrate and the hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer without peeling. For some applications the silicon dioxide bonding layer between the glass substrate and the primary electrode is not necessary.

    Nov 12, 1993
  • Appl. No.:
    8/152996
  • Inventors:
Jack H. Schmidt - Carlsbad CA
Ned Nestorovic - San Diego CA

  • Assignee:
Hughes-JVC Technology Corporation - Carlsbad CA
  • International Classification:
    G02F 11335
    G02F 11333
  • US Classification:
    359 40
  • Abstract:
In a liquid crystal light valve projector, a quarter-wave compensator plate is disposed between a polarization plate and a liquid crystal light valve to compensate for polarization irregularities induced by the off-incident reflections in the cone of light projected onto the LCLV. The quarter-wave compensation plate reverses the phase of the P component of said illumination light with respect to said compensator plate by 180. degree. thereby eliminating P-polarization leakage during the dark state of an LCLV projector. The invention also combines the compensator plate with a heat shield and a low stress-optical coefficient counter electrode substrate to reduce the birefringence of the LCLV thereby also minimizing leakage of P-polarized light onto the projection screen during the dark state of the projector.
