  • Laterally Releasable Connector Between Outer Well Member And Template

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44600470, Jul 17, 1984
  • Filed:
    Sep 23, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/422092
  • Inventors:
Roger L. Pokladnik - Houston TX
  • Assignee:
    Armco Inc. - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    E21B 33038
  • US Classification:
    166341
  • Abstract:
In underwater well installations of the type in which a template or like rigid base structure at the floor of a body of water defines a well opening, and an outer well member such as a suspension joint secured in the borehole projects upwardly within the well opening, the outer well member is connected to the template by a structure which restrains the outer well member from moving laterally relative to the base structure until the force tending to cause such lateral movement exceeds a predetermined large value, after which point the connection serves as a lost motion connection allowing the outer well member to move laterally through a limited excursion relative to the template.
  • Riser Tensioning Device

    view source
  • US Patent:
    57589909, Jun 2, 1998
  • Filed:
    Feb 21, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/804046
  • Inventors:
    Richard Davies - Irvine CA
Lyle D. Finn - Sugar Land TX
    Roger Pokladnik - Houston TX
Robert George Schoenberg - Katy TX
  • Assignee:
Deep Oil Technology, Incorporated - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 712
    E21B 1701
  • US Classification:
    4052422
  • Abstract:
A riser tensioning device that utilizes parallel air cans. A stem having an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of the riser is positioned around the riser and is fastened in position at the wellhead of the riser on the offshore structure. A yoke attached to the stem supports a number of sleeves around the stem. Each sleeve receives a variable buoyancy air can. The sleeves and air cans are provided with a retainer that retains the air cans in the sleeves and transfers the vertical loads of the air cans to the sleeve. The retainer is also designed to allow the air cans to be selectively removed from their individual sleeves without the need to pull the entire riser assembly.
  • Releasable Guide Post Mount And Method For Recovering Guide Posts By Remote Operations

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44390688, Mar 27, 1984
  • Filed:
    Sep 23, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/422091
  • Inventors:
Roger L. Pokladnik - Houston TX
  • Assignee:
    Armco Inc. - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    E02B 712
    F16L 3500
  • US Classification:
    405169
  • Abstract:
An apparatus for releasably supporting a guide post to an underwater well installation and a method for recovering such a guide post by remote operation from the surface. The apparatus comprises a support sleeve coupled to the well installation and receiving a lower end portion of the guide post therein, an outer actuating sleeve movably supported on the support sleeve, and a plurality of locking elements coupled to the support sleeve and moved radially inwardly into engagement with the guide post by means of the actuating sleeve. The locking elements have ring segments engageable by the actuating sleeve and radially inwardly directed pins which pass through bores in the support sleeve and are received in a locking groove in the guide post lower end portion. The guide post is recoverable by a remotely lowered and operated tool that has a first pair of jaws for engaging and lifting the actuating sleeve, thereby unlocking the guide post, and a second pair of jaws for engaging and retrieving the unlocked guide post to the surface.
  • Subsea Well With Retrievable Piping Deck

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44388179, Mar 27, 1984
  • Filed:
    Sep 29, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/426695
  • Inventors:
Roger L. Pokladnik - Houston TX
William A. Valka - Spring TX
  • Assignee:
    Armco Inc. - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    E21B 4301
  • US Classification:
    166341
  • Abstract:
An apparatus and method for drilling and completing a subsea well located at the seabed using a retrievable piping deck. The apparatus includes a template supported on the seabed, the retrievable piping deck supported on the template, a plurality of wellheads supported on the template and a plurality of Christmas trees supported on the wellheads. The piping deck has preinstalled flow lines and hydraulic lines to conduct well fluid from the Christmas trees to the surface and to conduct hydraulic control fluid from the surface to the trees. In addition to the Christmas trees, a well fluid manifold and a gaseous-liquid component separator can be supported on the template. The fluid connections between the Christmas trees and the hydraulic and flow lines and between the manifold and separator and the hydraulic and flow lines are accomplished by vertically oriented stab-in connectors. After installation of the template and drilling of the wells, the piping deck is lowered independently to the template and coupled thereto and then the Christmas trees and manifold-separator are lowered to the template and into fluid communication with the piping deck hydraulic and flow lines.
