Abstract:

A plastic sleeve positions a seat belt and conceals a seat belt end having an anchor plate connected to the vehicle body by an anchor bolt assemblage. The plastic sleeve comprises a tubular sleeve portion enclosing the belt end and extending adjacent to the seat. A base extends from the tubular sleeve for interposition between the anchor plate and the vehicle body. The base has integral upstanding side and end walls. A cover extends integrally from the sleeve portion and has downward depending side and end walls adapted to lie adjacent the side and end walls of the base in parallel juxtaposed relationship and overlie and conceal the anchor plate and bolt assemblage. A plastic living hinge connects the tubular sleeve with one of the cover and base, preferably the base, to permit flexure of the cover and base between relative open positions permitting access to the anchor bolt assemblage and closed positions concealing the anchor plate and bolt assemblage. Interfitting snap retention projections are molded integrally with the parallel juxtaposed side walls of the base and the cover to retain the cover and the base in the closed positions. The cover and tubular sleeve are preferably stiffly interconnected relative one another while the base portion is connected to the sleeve portion by a flexible living hinge.

Abstract:

An occupant restraint cushion system including a housing provided with a J-shaped base wall connected to a pair of laterally spaced side walls with one of the side walls having an enlarged circular opening formed therein and the other side wall having an aperture formed therein. A gas generator-diffuser combination is mounted in the opening with a threaded stud fixed with one end of the gas generator extending through the aperture and adapted to have a nut tightened thereon so as to draw the gas generator towards the associated apertured side wall and cause said one end of the gas generator together with the associated side wall and diffuser to define a chamber that communicates with the interior of the cushion through a portion of the diffuser that is spaced from the other of the side walls.

Abstract:

A shoulder belt carriage track extends longitudinally along the door window frame. The outboard shoulder belt end is attached to the window frame adjacent the rear end of the track and the inboard shoulder belt end is retractably mounted on the vehicle body inboard the occupant. A shoulder belt carriage is movable fore and aft along the track and slidably engages the shoulder belt. A rigid link has a rearward end pivotally connected to the carriage and a forward end mounted on the vehicle body. The fixed length of the rigid link is such that when the door is closed the carriage is established at the rear end of the track adjacent the end of the shoulder belt so that the shoulder belt is disposed in the normal diagonal position across the upper torso of the occupant. During door opening movement the link forcibly pulls the carriage forwardly to establish the shoulder belt in an occupant access position forwardly of the occupant. The link forcibly pushes the carriage rearwardly when the door is closed to reestablish the occupant restraining position of the shoulder belt.

Abstract:

A passive occupant restraint system includes a continuous loop restraint belt having an upper end mounted on the vehicle roof rearward and outboard of the seat and a lower end connected to the lower rear corner of the door. A junction ring is slidable along the restraint belt and is attached to one end of a control belt whose other end is mounted inboard the occupant seat by a retractor. The retractor normally retracts the control belt to pull the junction ring adjacent the inboard occupant hip so that the restraint belt is divided into lap and shoulder belt portions positioned across the seated occupant when the door is closed. A track extends longitudinally along the roof rail above the door opening and mounts a belt carriage which slidably receives the shoulder belt. A drive mechanism moves the carriage forwardly when the door opens to stow the shoulder belt portion generally along the roof rail while the lower end of the lap belt is simultaneously moved forwardly and outwardly by the swing geometry the door. The control belt is unwound from the retractor to accommodate the generally outward and forward movement of the lap and shoulder belts to the stowed positions.
