  • Abstract:
    A method for wellbore directional drilling includes selecting a starting and stopping spatial position of at least one portion of the wellbore. A sequence of sliding and rotary drilling operations within the portion is determined to calculate a wellbore trajectory. The sequence has at least one drilling operating parameter. The operations include a constraint on the drilling operating parameter or the calculated trajectory. The calculated trajectory includes a projected steering response of a steerable motor in response to the at least one drilling operating parameter. Drilling the portion of the wellbore is started. A spatial position of the wellbore during drilling is determined at at least one point intermediate the starting and stopping positions. Using a relationship between the projected steering response and the drilling operating parameter, the drilling parameter and/or the constraint are adjusted based on the measured spatial position and the stopping spatial position.

    A method for wellbore construction management includes measuring at least one drilling operating parameter during drilling of a wellbore. At least one well state parameter is calculated from the measured drilling operating parameter. A difference between the calculated well state parameter and a predetermined value of the well state parameter is determined. When the difference exceeds a selected threshold a modified well plan is calculated comprising at least one drilling task to enable construction of at least part of the wellbore to conform to the modified well plan. The at least one drilling task is displayed to a user.

The plan defines logical, sequential and conditional interrelationships between events in the plan, so that a controller can carry out the plan in a flexible and time-independent manner to complete the sequenced events. The definition of the logical, sequential and conditional interdependencies permits flexibility in how the controller uses the time and resources available to it so that the plan directs the controller in a non-prescriptive manner, allowing greater flexibility in plan execution and reducing the necessity for re-planning to occur when changes in the world or environment in which the controller executes the plan are detected.

    Automated control of a drillstring in a borehole, which is not in continuous rotation, the drillstring comprising an angled component (a bent sub or the like) and a downhole means of rotating the bit, such as a motor or turbine, which rotates the bit independently of drillstring rotation. Near the distal end of the drillstring are measurement devices, at least one and in some aspects two or more, which are used to measure the orientation of the drillstring/bent sub/bottomhole assembly/drill bit with respect to a geophysical field of the earth, such as magnetism (magnetic toolface) or gravity (gravitational toolface). These measurement devices may be connected to a communications module which transmits the downhole toolface information to the surface. The drillstring is controlled to provide that based upon the downhole measurements the drilling system drills the borehole in a desired trajectory.
