Abstract:
Condensation can he an important process in both emerging and traditional power generation and water desalination technologies. Superhydrophobic nanostructures can promise enhanced condensation heat transfer by reducing the characteristic size of departing droplets via a surface-tension-driven mechanism. A superhydrophobic surface can include nanostructures of a metal oxide having further surface modification.

Abstract:
Membrane distillation system. The system includes a solar radiation absorbing porous membrane positioned to receive solar radiation to heat the membrane. A transparent cover is spaced apart from the membrane to form a channel through which a saline feed stream flows. A condensation structure is spaced apart from an opposite side of the porous membrane forming an air gap channel there between. Means are provided for coolant flow along an outside surface of the condensation structure so that distilled water will condense on the condensation structure for collection from the air gap channel.

Abstract:
An apparatus for cooling electronic circuitry components and photonic components. In examples of the disclosure at least one photonic component is positioned overlaying at least one electronic circuitry component. In examples of the disclosure there is also provided a spacer for spacing the at least one electronic circuitry component and the at least one photonic component, wherein the spacer for spacing are thermally insulating. In examples of the disclosure there is also provided a first heat transfer configured to remove heat from the at least one electronic circuitry component, and a second heat transfer configured to remove heat from the at least one photonic component.

A hierarchical structured surface can have high heat transfer performance during a phase change process. Using hierarchically structured surfaces, an enhancement in critical heat flux (CHF) of 160% or higher on a microstructured surface can be obtained.
