Abstract:

A heat exchanger includes a thermally-conductive fluid barrier having first and second surfaces, at least one first type of foam element placed in thermally-conductive contact with the first surface of the thermally-conductive fluid barrier and having a first coefficient of thermal expansion and at least one second type of foam element placed in thermally-conductive contact with the second surface of the thermally-conductive fluid barrier and having a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The first coefficient of thermal expansion of the first type of foam element and the second coefficient of thermal expansion of the second type of foam element are substantially different.

Abstract:

A family of iron-based, phosphor-containing bulk metallic glasses having excellent processability and toughness, methods for forming such alloys, and processes for manufacturing articles therefrom are provided. The inventive iron-based alloy is based on the observation that by very tightly controlling the composition of the metalloid moiety of the Fe-based, P-containing bulk metallic glass alloys it is possible to obtain highly processable alloys with surprisingly low shear modulus and high toughness. Further, by incorporating small fractions of silicon (Si) and cobalt (Co) into the Fe—Ni—Mo—P—C—B system, alloys of 3 and 4 mm have been synthesized with high saturation magnetization and low switching losses.

Abstract:

A portable cot which is light in weight, may be disassembled into a compact package but which forms a firm sleeping surface when assembled. The cot has a generally rectangular canvas surface with an elongated pocket along each side. Side rails are held in each of the pockets and three leg assemblies are affixed to the side rails by wire U-shaped legs pivotally attached to the bottom to a base bar and at the top to the side rails. Adjustable straps tighten the side rails against the legs and form a firm assembly with the base bars. The straps may be adjusted so that the bed can be made level even against a slanted surface.

Abstract:

An integrated optical beam steering device includes a planar Luneburg lens that collimates beams from different inputs in different directions within the lens plane. It also includes a curved (e.g., semi-circular or arced) grating coupler that diffracts the collimated beams out of the lens plane. The beams can be steered in the plane by controlling the direction along which the lens is illuminated and out of the plane by varying the beam wavelength. Unlike other beam steering devices, this device can operate over an extremely wide field of view—up to 180—without any aberrations off boresight. In other words, the beam quality is uniform in all directions, unlike with aplanatic lenses, thanks to the circular symmetry of the planar Luneburg lens, which may be composed of subwavelength features. The lens is also robust to misalignment and fabrication imperfections and can be made using standard CMOS processes.
