Thermoplastic polyolefin compositions and a process for preparing the same are provided comprising a blend of polypropylene, and styrenic elastomer. The compositions may further comprise ethylene copolymer elastomer, polymer additive, such as polymer surface modifier, powder flow additive, stabilizer and/or color pigment. The compositions are particularly applicable for use in a slush molding process where low melt viscosity is desired to form improved surface quality thermoplastic polyolefin skin. A process is disclosed for preparing thermoplastic polyolefin into a slush moldable powder by melt compounding the composition to form pellets, and further processing the pellets by cryogenic pulverization or by extruding micropellets in one step using a gear pump to increase the melt pressure.
Thermoplastic Compositions Containing Metal Material
Thermoplastic compositions containing metal materials and a method for preparing the same. The compositions are formed into particles having diameters suitable for a rotational thermoforming processing. The compositions are particularly applicable for use in slush molding processes where efficient heat transfer to the material is desired to form improved surface quality thermoplastic skin. A preferred method for preparing thermoplastic compositions containing metal material into a slush moldable powder comprises melt compounding the composition to form pellets, and further processing the pellets by cryogenic pulverization. A preferred method for forming micropellets uses an extruder having a gear pump to increase the melt pressure.

International Classification:
B60R021/20
US Classification:
280/728300, 296/070000, 280/732000
Abstract:
According to the present invention, an instrument panel cover for use in an instrument panel of a vehicle compartment having a supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system and a method for manufacturing the instrument panel cover are provided. The instrument panel cover includes a body having an inner surface and an opposing outer surface, the body having an air bag cushion deployment region formed in the inner surface thereof, the deployment region being defined by at least one score formed in the inner surface to a predetermined depth, wherein the at least one score is formed by at least one scoring member which contacts the instrument panel cover during the manufacture thereof and the advancement of the at least one scoring member causes the instrument panel cover to thin out in predetermined locations which define the at least one score. Because the present invention incorporates the scoring process into the process for forming the instrument panel cover, the present invention advantageously eliminates the need of secondary scoring of the air bag door seam and therefore provides cost benefits and a reduction in processing and manufacturing times.
Slush Moldable Thermoplastic Polyolefin Formulation For Interior Skin

Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
C08L 23/04
US Classification:
525240000
Abstract:
A thermoplastic polyolefin composition suitable for slush molding comprising a blend of polypropylene, styrenic elastomer, linear low density polyethylene and a hydrocarbon-based process oil. Optional components include an ethylene copolymer elastomer, polymer additives such as polymer surface modifiers, powder flow additives, stabilizers and/or color pigments. The compositions exhibit a low melt viscosity during processing and improved surface quality for the molded article. An exemplary composition includes about 20-50 wt. % polypropylene or copolymer thereof, about 20-60 wt. % of a styrenic elastomer, about 5-50 wt. % linear low density polyethylene, and about 2-25 wt. % of a hydrocarbon-based process oil. The zero shear viscosity of the composition suitable for slush molding is in the range of about 300-900 Pas over a processing temperature range of 180-260 C.
