As the satellites departure date lagged, the Air Force extended the life of the blocks last two satellites by replacing obsolete parts so they will operate longer than the original three years, according to Col. Scott Larrimore, Space and Missile Systems Center Weather Program director.
The Air Force was prepared to launch DMSP-19 about 15 years ago, but the satellites in orbitwere lasting much longer than expected, so it went into storage instead, said Scott Larrimore,weather-program director at the Air Forces Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles.
