Abstract:
An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield is provided. The EMI shield may include a frame and a cover operative to be placed over the frame. The cover may include snaps or tabs extending from the surface of the cover and operative to engage side walls of the frame. At least one edge of the cover, for example an edge operative to be placed near an electronic device housing, may not include snaps or tabs to reduce the size of the EMI shield near the housing. Instead, the frame may include one or more stepped returns, the top-most of which may be operative to be placed in contact with the cover. The cover may include a spring, an emboss and one or more grounding points to ensure that the cover remains in contact with the frame despite the absence of snaps or tabs securing the cover to the frame.

Abstract:
An electronic device such as a portable music player, cellular telephone, or computer may be provided with an audio jack system that allows audio plug position measurements to be made. Sensors such as optical sensors, magnetic sensors, mechanical sensors, electrical sensors, resistive sensors, and capacitive sensors may be used in monitoring the position and movement of the audio plug relative to the audio jack. A user may rotate the audio plug to control operations such as media playback operations, menu selection operations, and other activities in the electronic device. The audio jack may include flexible structures that allow the audio plug to be tilted relative to the audio jack. Capacitive sensors or other sensors may be used to monitor audio plug tilt and axial audio plug movement. This allows the audio plug to serve as a joystick for the electronic device.

Abstract:
Slide switch assemblies with structural enhancements are provided for use in electronic devices. Slide switch assemblies in accordance with embodiments the invention can include a button, an engagement member, and switch box. The engagement member couples the button to the switch box and translates any movement of the button to the switch box. The switch box is mounted offset with respect to the button because another component such as, for example, a display screen occupies the space that would have been a better mounting position for the switch box. To compensate for the offset, and the added torsion that is applied to the engagement member during button movement events, the engagement member is structurally enhanced.

Abstract:
An electronic device can include different components providing different functionality. Some electronic devices can include a proximity sensor for determining when a user's face is near the device. The sensor can include an emitter and a detector that are separated by a foam block to limit cross-talk between the emitter and detector. A sheet can be placed over the foam block to define openings for each of the emitter and detector. Some electronic devices can also include a camera. A glass cover secured to the device enclosure can protect the camera. To improve an adhesive bond between the glass cover and a metal enclosure, an ink layer can be placed between an adhesive and the glass. In addition, the camera or another component may need to be grounded to ensure proper operation. During assembly, however, the position of the camera can shift due to closing an enclosure. A grounding assembly that maintains contact with the camera in its initial and final positions can be provided.

Abstract:
Electronic devices may include electronic device structures such substrates, structures with cavities, and housing structures. Tape may be used to seal components to the surface of a substrate or within a cavity. The tape may have a nonstick polymer layer such as a layer of parylene and one or two layers of adhesive. The nonstick layer may be formed in a pattern so that some of the layer of adhesive is uncovered by the nonstick layer. The nonstick layer may be oriented so that the adhesive is interposed between the nonstick layer and a sealed component or may be oriented so that the nonstick layer is interposed between the adhesive layer and the sealed component. The component that is sealed by the tape may be an electrical component such as a dome switch or other mechanical or electrical component.

Abstract:
A method of manufacture for a portable computing device is described. In particular, methods and apparatus for assessing a quality of weld joints used to connect one or more components of the portable computing device are described. The weld joints can include one or more weld points. At a weld check station, using a vector network analyzer, a test signal generated can be passed through the weld joint and a response signal can be measured. The measured characteristics can be used to assess a quality of the weld joint. In one embodiment, the vector network analyzer can be used to generate a number of high frequency test signals that are passed through the weld to perform a time domain reflectometry measurement where the weld joint can be accepted or rejected based upon the measurement.

An electronic device may have buttons, a display, and a vibrator unit. Buttons may be included in electronic devices such as glass buttons, metal buttons, buttons that are assembled on printed circuit boards, and buttons that are partly formed from antenna structures. Button coatings may be used to improve the sliding performance of metal-on-metal buttons. A layer of polymer may be interposed between a button plate and a housing structure. A glass button member may have an underside on which a layer of patterned ink is formed. Elastomeric members may be used to reduce button rattle. Portions of a button may be provided with conductive features that form portions of an antenna.

San Jose State University sociology professor Scott Myers-Lipton said he thinks the joining of a union by the 84 full- and part-time drivers could signal to other lower-wage workers that union representation may be a way to narrow the income gap in the Valley.
drivers for Google and Apple have contacted them about launching their own union drives. San Jose State sociology professor Scott Myers-Lipton thinks the Facebook drivers' actions could signal to other lower-wage workers that union representation may be a way to narrow the income gap in the Valley.
The drivers' plight, said San Jose State University sociology professor Scott Myers-Lipton, could resonate with other lower-income workers, especially here in Silicon Valley where the gap between the very wealthy and everyone else seems more pronounced each week.
Scott Myers-Lipton, a sociology professor at San Jose State University who last year led a measure that increased the minium wage within the city to $10, said AB 10 by Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville) is a positive step but lacks the power to increase wages with inflation.
