Abstract:
A double balanced mixer comprising a plurality of transistors, each transistor being adapted to operate in the microwave frequency range and including an input electrode, a control electrode, and an output electrode, the transistors being arranged in a ring configuration with the control electrodes of a first pair of the transistors being interconnected and the control electrodes of a second pair of the transistors being interconnected; circuitry for coupling an input signal having a frequency within a predetermined frequency band in the microwave frequency range to the input electrodes of the ring of transistors and for producing a 180. degree. relative phase difference between the input signal applied to the input electrodes of first transistors of the first and second pairs of transistors and the input signal applied to the input electrodes of second transistors of the first and second pairs of transistors; circuitry for coupling a local oscillator signal to the control electrodes of the ring of transistors and for producing a 180. degree. relative phase difference between the local oscillator signal applied to the control electrodes of the first pair of transistors and the local oscillator signal applied to the control electrodes of the second pair of transistors; and circuitry for biasing the plurality of transistors in their linear operating regions; whereby the ring of transistors produces at the output electrodes an output signal having a frequency which is a function of the frequencies of the input signal and the local oscillator signal for input signals within the predetermined frequency band.

Abstract:
An ultraminiature delay line assembly for use with an electronic system. The delay line is utilized for producing and introducing a known controllable time delay to an electrical signal without the accompanying signal attenuation normally associated with traditional coaxial delay lines. The ultraminiature delay line utilizes miniature coaxial transmission cable which is smaller in diameter than the coaxial transmission cable traditionally used. An ultraminiature delay line includes a thin substrate supporting base plate. Mounted on the thin substrate supporting base plate are numerous concentrically wound miniature coaxial cable assemblies. Coupled to the middle of each miniature coaxial cable assembly is a signal amplifying device having variable programmable gain which offsets signal attenuation caused by the length of miniature coaxial cable. Signal switching devices may be included to route the delayed signal from one miniature coaxial cable assembly to another miniature coaxial cable assembly or the delayed signal may be transferred to an output signal connector. Each coaxial cable assembly may be configured to provide different delays.

Abstract:
An electromagnetic, reflective type, active proximity sensor includes a transmitter, the transmitter including a voltage controlled oscillator circuit, a transmitter circular waveguide and a transmitter polarization circuit. The voltage controlled oscillator circuit generates an output signal which is modulated such that the frequency of the output signal varies over time between a range of frequencies. The frequency varying, output signal is provided to the transmitter circular waveguide and propagated to the transmitter polarization circuit where it is circularly polarized in a first circular direction. The circularly polarized, frequency varying, output signal is radiated by the transmitter to the target, where it strikes the target and reflects back toward the sensor to form return signals. The return signals, upon being reflected, rotate in a second circular direction opposite to the first circular direction. The return signals also respectively exhibit one of the frequencies corresponding to the range of frequencies associated with the circularly polarized, frequency varying, output signal.

A low power, low cost, millimeter wave (MMW) proximity sensor that provides over a 6:1 increase in minimum detection range (55 mm minimum) compared to standard 18 mm inductive proximity sensors preferably includes a low cost MMW Gunn oscillator, MMW detector and analog processing/driver circuitry. The sensor is preferably designed for 3-wire operation and will fit in a standard 18 mm tube.

Abstract:
A coaxial-to-coplanar waveguide connector is used for interconnecting stripline compatible devices utilizing coaxial cable. The connector is formed at the end of a length of coaxial cable embedded within a circuit board. The connector generally has a substantially semi-circular connection section. The connection section includes a conductor partly surrounded by an electrically insulative dielectric which is partly surrounded by a shield. An electrically conductive sheet is used to couple the shield to a ground plane of the circuit board. Electrically conductive ribbon is connect the conductor to a stripline compatible device. The coaxial-to-coplanar waveguide connector may be fabricated by coating a dielectric board with an adhesive material and then routing a length of miniature coaxial cable in the adhesive. Conductive material and dielectric material are consecutively laid upon the dielectric cable board. A portion of the board including a section of miniature coaxial cable is milled so as to remove a top portion of the cable.
