Abstract:
A broadband loaded antenna and matching network with related methods for design optimization are disclosed. The loaded antenna structures may preferably be either monopole or dipole antennas, but the particular methods and techniques presented herein may be applied to additional antenna configurations. The load circuits positioned along an antenna may comprise parallel inductor-resistor configurations or other combinations of passive circuit elements. A matching network for connecting an antenna to a transmission line or other medium preferably includes at least a transmission line transformer and a parallel inductor. Various optimization techniques are presented to optimize the design of such broadband monopole antennas. These techniques include implementation of simple genetic algorithms (GAs) or micro-GAs. Component modeling for selected components may be effected through either lumped element representation or curved wire representation.

Abstract:
An electromagnetic bandgap material is electrically attached to an edge, and enables high isolation between antennas due to the attenuation of surface waves. The disclosed embodiments further provide narrow reactive edge treatments in the form of artificial magnetic conductors (AMCs) whose physical width is less than 1/10 of a free space wavelength for the frequency of surface currents intended to be suppressed. These embodiments still further provide several AMCs suitable for this purpose, along with several exemplary manufacturing techniques for the AMCs.

Abstract:
A multi-band artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is described in an electrically small antenna for use in handheld wireless devices and base station antenna applications. The multi-band AMC contains a ground plane, two or more frequency selected surfaces (FSS) having periodic conductive patches disposed on opposing surfaces and a dielectric layer sandwiched between the surfaces, and dielectric layers between the FSS layers and between the lower FSS layer and the ground plane. Various parameters of the dual band AMC are chosen such that the AMC has non-harmonically related resonant frequencies within two or more different frequency bands.

An apparatus for suppressing noise in an electronic device includes a multiple layer structure in which localized arrays of chip capacitors and/or patches around sources of electromagnetic waves are used. The PCB includes multiple conductive layers at different potentials, dielectric layers separating the conductive layers, conductive rods extending between at least two of the conductive layers, and a layer of patches disposed adjacent or on one or more of the conductive layers. The conductive rods are connected to one of the conductive layers and chip capacitors connect the conductive rods to another of the conductive layers. A particular location can be effectively isolated from noise using a few unit cells of an array of patches/capacitors partially or completely surrounding the particular location.

Abstract:
A printed circuit board (PCB) uses arrays of chip capacitors over the entire surface of the PCB. The PCB includes an upper conductive surface routing signals to components of the PCB, a lower conductive surface, vias between the upper and lower surfaces, and a layer of patches disposed between the upper and lower surfaces to which the vias and chip capacitors are connected. The chip capacitors connect the vias to the upper conductive surface. The use of chip capacitors in a periodic lattice extends the frequency range for suppressing noise in power planes of isolated capacitors from several hundred MHz or less to 4 GHz. Combining the capacitors along with the buried patches extends the low frequency cutoff of high frequency reference noise suppression circuits to 50 MHz or less.
