Abstract:
Apparatus and method are disclosed by which a hollow distal end portion of a wire may be deposited at selected sites in body passageways. The apparatus includes an elongate wire (solid or hollow) having a distal end section for detachment and delivery to a target location, the wire also having a discontinuity located rearwardly of the distal end section for rupturing when vibrational energy is applied to the wire. The discontinuities may take the form of cuts formed in the wire, reduced diameter sections in the wire, adhesive, welded or soldered couplings between the wire and the distal end section, or the wire transitioning from the wire to a large mass disposed on the distal end section. A catheter is coupled to or surrounds the elongate wire to deliver therapeutic liquid to a target body location. The apparatus includes a vibrational energy source couplable to the proximal end of the wire for selectively applying vibrational energy to the wire to travel to the discontinuity and cause detachment of the end section.
A combustion device for providing a stream of combustion products. In particular, there is a combustion device, utilizing micro-sized combustion tubes, that can 1) control firing profiles of an array of combustion tubes, 2) control acoustics generated thereby, and 3) provide an exhaust gas for actuating an attached device, like a piston. The array of combustion tubes is individually controlled. Wherein the array of tubes comprises either uniformly dimensioned tubes or is formed of a variety of dimensions, like length and diameter, which are arranged in selected patterns. There can be either a single ignition point at an end of the combustion tubes, or a multiple of ignition points positioned along the interior length of the tubes. There is also a combustion sequence that self extinguishing after burning all of the fuel in the combustion tube at the end of each cycle.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for selectively delivering a medicament to a target location of the wall of a body cavity, blood vessel, or the like, comprising a compressed hollow cylinder of permeable, expandable foam, attached to the distal end of a delivery device such as a catheter or catheter guidewire. Using the delivery device, the compressed cylinder is advanced to a target location within the body, and the compressed foam cylinder is allowed to expand so as to contact the walls of the body cavity, blood vessel, or the like, while allowing bodily fluids to freely flow through the central lumen of the cylinder. The foam cylinder is provided with means for perfusing it with a medicament so that the medicament is placed in contact with the walls of the patients anatomy, and is also provided with means for preventing the medicament from entering the patients bloodstream.

Abstract:
A catheter guidewire includes an elongate solid body about which a catheter may be threaded for guidance to a target location in a vasculature passageway of a body. The elongate body includes a proximal end and a distal end, with the distal end being curved. Cuts are formed either by saw-cutting, laser cutting or etching at spaced-apart locations along the length of the body to increase its lateral flexibility. Integral beams are also formed within the body to maintain its torsional strength. The relative location and size of cuts and beams may be selectively adjusted so as to control the direction and degree of flexure, and the change in torsional stiffness relative to flexibility.
Method And Apparatus For Forming Cuts In Catheters, Guide Wires, And The Like
A method of forming cuts in elongate objects such as a catheters and guide wires, using a cutting device which includes a movable cutting means, a clamping means for holding the elongate object while the cutting means makes an incision therein, and a manipulating means including a pinch roller assembly including a first roller and a second roller, and configured for advancing the elongated object to the clamping means and rotating the elongate object, the method comprising the steps of: a) providing a length of the elongate object to the manipulating means; b) advancing the elongate object toward the clamping means by rotation of a roller of the pinch roller assembly; c) rotating the pinch roller assembly so as to rotate the elongate object about a lengthwise axis of the elongate object; d) engaging the clamping means around the elongate object; e) cutting the elongate object; f) advancing the cutting means toward the elongate object until a desired cutting depth has been reached; and, g) retracting the cutting means.

Abstract:
A hybrid catheter guide wire includes an elongate solid body having a tapered distal end over which is disposed a tubular sectionâabout which a catheter may be threaded for guidance to a target location in a vasculature passageway of a body. Cuts are formed either by saw-cutting, laser cutting or etching at spaced-apart locations along at least a portion of the tubular section to increase its lateral flexibility, while maintaining its rotational torquability, and to control the direction and degree of flexure.
A molecular drag vacuum pump configured for pumping a gas stream from an inlet to an outlet, the pump including a high-speed spinning disk having a channel formed in its edge, disposed within a housing. A passageway is formed on the inside of the housing adjacent the disk, and gas comes in contact with surfaces of the spinning disk in successive stages, conformable wipers being disposed adjacent the spinning disk to direct the gas stream to the successive stages. The disk can be powered by an integral motor, comprising permanent magnets associated with the disk and cooperating coils associated with the housing.
