Philosophy:
Dr. Lahey comes from a strong family of surgery in Massachusetts and his academic interests have been in outcomes research and process analysis. He has been an active member of the Northern New England cardiovascular Disease Study Group, a national leader in outcomes data analysis for cardiac surgery, for many years. He has also been a national leader with the Society for Thoracic Surgery on patient safety initiatives; the Secretary of the Massachusetts Society for Thoracic Surgery and the past Chairman of the Massachusetts Continuous Quality Improvement Committee of the Mass STS. He has also been a consultant for the New York State Department of Public Health.
The education of young doctors has always been a major interest in Dr. LaheyâÂÂs career as an academic cardiothoracic surgeon. He is currently the Program Director of the SUNY Downstate Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program, which is a joint program with State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and Maimonides Medical Center. The education of our residents and medical students is a high priority status in the long term strategic planning of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. As Dr. Lahey exclaims, âÂÂOnly through teaching do we refresh and renew the body of knowledge that we as senior clinicians rely uponâÂÂ.
The future of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Maimonides is one of enormous potential. With his experience in process analysis, Dr. Lahey will build on the Maimonides national recognition and tradition of surgical excellence by moving into the realm of process analysis and total data transparency. He sees a gradual blurring of traditional distinctions between Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery into one of the collaborative service to the community of patients and referring physicians, alike.
