Abstract:

A marine crankcase lubricating oil composition characterized by having a Total Base Number from about 3 to 10 comprising a mineral lubricating oil, an overbased calcium alkylphenolate, a zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate, an ethoxylated alkylphenol, and an N-alkylglycine derivative having the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a hydrocarbyl radical having from about 10 to 25 carbon atoms, R' represents hydrogen or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or an aminoalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R" represents an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a --CH. sub. 2 --CH. sub. 2 --NH). sub. x H radical in which x has a value from 1 to 3, or ##STR2## in which X represents an oxygen atom or a divalent N-R' radical and R and R' have the values noted above.

Abstract:

Aluminum bromide is prepared by an electrochemical process in a cell with an aluminum anode, employing as the electrolyte, a solution of hydrogen bromide in an aprotic solvent capable of dissolving both hydrogen bromide and aluminum bromide. After initiation of the reaction with an electric current, the reaction proceeds without additional electrical power. The product is a solution of aluminum bromide and may also include solid aluminum bromide if the amount produced exceeds the solubility limit of the solvent.

Abstract:

Disclosed are novel compounds prepared by the reaction of an adduct of a phosphosulfurized polyisoalkylene or alpha olefin with an acidified hexavalent molybdenum salt which give enhanced copper corrosion protection relative to the non-molybdenum treated adducts when incorporated in lubricants. Also disclosed is the combination of such compounds with a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, which combination imparts to lubricants an oxidation inhibition greater than is obtainable with either the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or the molybdenum-containing adduct alone.
