Abstract:

An engine timing plate is disclosed that is generally positioned between a crankshaft surface and a main journal. The engine timing plate is not bolted or otherwise secured to either the crankshaft surface or the main journal. Instead, the timing plate “floats” between the two surfaces. The timing plate includes protruding portion that mates or temporarily associates with a receiving portion disposed on the crankshaft. The timing plate also generally includes a raised surface forming an integrated thrust surface that may engage with, but not necessarily interlock with, one or both of the crankshaft surface and the main journal. Thus, the rotational motion of the crankshaft maintains the relative position of the timing plate with respect to the crankshaft surface and/or the main journal without the use of standard mechanical connectors, such as bolts.

Abstract:

A forged crankshaft includes a plurality of main journals, a plurality of crank pin journals rotatable in a circular path about axes defined by the main journals, and a plurality of crank webs. At least one crank web of the plurality of crank webs defines a middle crank web which is located between and connects two neighboring crank pin journals of the plurality of crank pin journals. The middle crank web has a stress relief forged therein, which is defined by first and second spaced sidewalls, an inner wall and a base wall. The forged-in stress relief has a predetermined depth, wrap angle, radius, and undercut which together define a shape of the forged-in stress relief. The shape of the forged-in stress relief is controlled to reduce stress in the crankshaft.

Abstract:

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block having a cylinder head connected to an upper end thereof. A front end of the cylinder block has a coolant introduction passage. A timing chain provided at the front end is engaged to a camshaft sprocket associated with the cylinder head. A timing chain cover is mounted to and spaced forward of the cylinder block front end. A water pump assembly includes a pump housing and an impeller assembly. The pump housing is directly secured to the cylinder block and interposed between the timing chain cover and the front end of the cylinder block. The pump housing has a pump chamber in fluid communication with the coolant introduction passage. The impeller assembly is removably mounted in the pump chamber without removal of the timing chain cover. An end of an impeller drive shaft extends forward of the timing chain cover.
