Abstract:

A method for estimating a geographic location of a mobile station within a coverage area of a wireless network includes: determining a radial distance of the mobile station from a serving base station based on a round trip measurement and calculating an angular position of the mobile station in relation to the radial distance based on a first signal strength measurement, a second signal strength measurement, and an angular position reference that extends outward from the serving base station. The signal strength measurements representative of power characteristics of RF signals received by the mobile station from first and second sector antennas of the serving base station. An apparatus associated therewith includes a distance module to perform the determining and an angular position module to perform the calculating. The apparatus may be implemented in a base station, a geo-location service node, a network management node, or other communication nodes.

Abstract:

A method for estimating a geographic location of a mobile station includes calculating an angular position of a mobile station to a base station based on first and second signal strength measurements and an angular position reference for the base station, the signal strength measurements from the mobile station for RF signals from first and second sector antennas of the base station. Another method includes calculating a radial distance of a mobile station from a base station serving the mobile station, determining a signal strength report from the mobile station includes a signal strength measurement for an RF signal from a first sector antenna of the base station, and identifying a geographic location of the mobile station based on intersection of a circle around the base station with a radius of the radial distance with a sub-sector geographic area in an RF coverage map for the first sector antenna.

Abstract:

A method of handoff utilizing a combined signal quality measurement to trigger or initiate a handoff of a mobile station to a plurality of neighbor base stations, wherein the combined signal quality measurement corresponds to a summation of signal quality measurements associated with the plurality of neighbor base stations. The handoff is triggered when the combined signal quality measurement is greater than a handoff threshold. By using the combined signal quality measurement instead of a signal quality measurement of an individual neighbor base station, handoffs can be triggered earlier along a boundary shared by neighbor cells, thereby reducing interference associated with later triggered handoffs. When triggered, the mobile station is handed off to a plurality of neighbor base stations allowing the mobile station to establish simultaneous communication links with two or more neighbor base station. This increases the chance that at least one of the communication links or the combination thereof is a strong communication link, thereby improving the reliability and success rate of handoffs.

Abstract:

A method of call setup in a wireless communication system in which cross carrier Y traffic channels at a serving base station and one or more neighbor base stations are assigned to a mobile station during system access to improve call setup when the mobile station is in a cross carrier Y cell or coverage area of one of the neighbor base stations. The serving base station is selected by the mobile station based on the signal quality of an access carrier X. Traffic channels are assigned to the mobile station on the cross carrier Y at the serving base station and one or more neighbor base stations. If the cross carrier Y cell of the serving base station covers less geographical area than a corresponding access carrier X cell, then the mobile station may be in the cross carrier Y cell of one of the neighbor base stations. In such a case, the mobile station should be able to establish a communication link with that neighbor base station even though it may not be able to establish a communication link with the serving base station, thereby improving call setup in cross carrier channel assignments.

Embodiments are described herein to provide a general approach to wireless outage recovery. One general approach involves network equipment detecting () an outage condition for a wireless coverage area. In response to detecting the outage condition, the network equipment adjusts () a tilt setting of an antenna at a wireless node having a neighboring wireless coverage area.
