Trailblazer Grantee Award Recipient
Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council
CCL has built an impressive array of training expertise and resources around disability identity, history, and pride, which has personally impacted many people with and without disabilities. This project has been a forerunner in Michigan, helping participants and partners recognize the often-unacknowledged contribution of disability in history, public education, and the human experience.
CCL maintains a strong focus on diversity and valuing everyone. Differences in mental or physical disability, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, marital status, and religious or non-religious background are viewed as strengths. They have challenged ALL participants of their programs, those with and without disabilities, to do serious thinking around diversity and inclusion.
CCL has made an outstanding contribution to the disability landscape in Michigan, and how one thinks of disability. They have consistently assisted people with disabilities in finding their pride and their voice. They have worked with organizations to undergo a philosophical shift in how they think about disabilities and how they can improve their services by changing their thought processes. They have developed a “Scale of Inclusion” used by organizations to determine their level of inclusion of people with disabilities.
With the development of their products and services, this trailblazer grantee has sparked a disability pride movement in the state and has continuously provided a wealth of information on this topic. They have traveled from Lake Superior to the Detroit Harbor, and from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron to provide training opportunities and technical assistance on these topics. They have set a high bar for all in thinking about disabilities and challenging all types of isms. They have set an example on working with youth and targeting the next generation of advocates. They continue to serve as a beacon for the Council in this arena.
