Abstract:

The present invention is a system and method of reducing nitrogen oxides in coal combustion exhaust gases and preventing fire and explosion in pulverized coal systems. The present invention first cools the flue gas exiting a boiler of the pulverized coal system with an air preheater. The present invention removes any particles such as fly ash from the cooled flue gas with an electro-static precipitor or a bag house and recirculates the flue gas. The temperature of the recirculated flue gas is adjusted to a desired temperature and is injected into the pulverizer with combustion air from the air preheater, creating a safer environment for pulverizing the fuel. This mixture of pulverized fuel, air and flue gas is then burned in the boiler, resulting in a cleaner output containing significantly less nitrous oxide.

Abstract:

A process for reducing sulfur emissions and increasing particulate removal in the combustion of pulverized coal is presented. Pulverized sulfur-containing coal is injected along with combustion air into a combustion chamber and fired to create a combustion zone within the chamber, thereby creating gaseous sulfur and particulate emission products. The emission products are directed to an exhaust means where the particulate emission products are removed. A fuel having negligible sulfur content and a heating value higher than coal is injected in substantially the same direction as the coal and combustion air stream into a region of the combustion zone through which a majority of the of the gaseous sulfur emissions must pass to reach the exhaust means, thus increasing the temperature of the region in an amount sufficient to increase the sulfur content of the particulate emission products.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for determining at least one characteristic of a formation is provided which includes storing a plurality of counts received from both a long space radiation detector and a short space radiation detector. The counts are detected during a plurality of short duration time periods which are brief compared to rotary drilling speed. A count rate mean is determined and used to sort each of the plurality of count measurements into one of at least three bins. Count information accumulated in at least one of the bins is used to calculate a corrected density. A short space collimator enhances the count rate of singly scattered gamma rays detected by the short space detector and blocks gamma rays from the formation radially outwardly of the short space detector to improve spine-rib correction characteristics for relatively short standoffs. The method of sorting the plurality of short duration time period measurements improves the accuracy for short standoffs to larger standoffs.
