Process For Minimizing Electrostatic Damage And Pole Tip Recession Of Magnetoresistive Magnetic Recording Head During Pole Tip Trimming By Focused Ion Beam Milling
Thomas Young Chang - Menlo Park CA Michael Andrew Parker - Fremont CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H01J 3708
US Classification:
25049221, 2504923, 20429836, 2960313
Abstract:
The improved method for trimming a magnetic head utilizing a FIB tool includes a step of aligning the FIB tool milling boxes without imaging critical pole tip components and structure. The method includes the creation of an alignment box that is disposed in a known, fixed orientation relative to the FIB tool milling boxes. The FIB tool is aligned by imaging only the alignment box and by moving the alignment box relative to known pole tip structural characteristics that are disposed away from the critical pole tip components. The alignment box is visually aligned on non-sensitive pole tip components in such a manner that the milling boxes will be properly aligned relative to the sensitive pole tip components. FIB tool milling is thereafter performed within the milling boxes which have been accurately aligned without imaging of sensitive pole tip components.
Magnetic Head Having Write Head With Double Split Yoke
Thomas Young Chang - Menlo Park CA Terence Tin-Lok Lam - San Jose CA Edward HinPong Lee - San Jose CA Samuel Wonder Yuan - Saratoga CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 531
US Classification:
360126, 360123
Abstract:
The magnetic head of the present invention includes a P pole having an opening formed therethrough, and a P pole that is formed over the opening. A second magnetic pole tip is positioned relative to the first magnetic pole such that the first magnetic pole is symmetrically disposed relative to the second magnetic pole tip. Induction coils may be helically wound around portions of the first and/or second magnetic poles, or, alternatively, a planar, spiral induction coil may be fabricated for use with the first and second magnetic poles. An enhanced embodiment includes a first magnetic pole tip piece having a length that defines the throat length of the magnetic head and a thickness that increases the gap at rearward portions of the second magnetic pole tip of the magnetic head.
Method For Manufacturing A Pole Tip Trimmed Read/Write Head Structure
A method for finishing a pole tip trimmed read/write heat that includes a substrate with a pole tip structure having a shield, a shield/pole, and an outer pole. A gap region separates the pole and the shield/pole. First, pole tip trimming is performed to the read/write head to remove matter from the shield/pole, the pole, and the gap region. This defines a bridge composed of inward-facing extensions of the pole and shield/pole interconnected by an intervening region. This bridge separates recessed âtrenches,â each formed by removing a contiguous mass from the shield/pole, the gap region, and the pole. Next, an overlayer is applied over the pole tip structure, filling the recessed trenches. The coated structure is then trimmed to remove all coating material overlying the shield/pole and pole. Trimming is continued to additionally remove a top layer of the protrusions of the pole and shield/pole to remove any rounded edges created by pole tip patterning, resulting in a more distinct write head.
Magnetic Recording Head With A Side Shield Structure For Controlling Side Reading Of Thin Film Read Sensor
Thomas Young Chang - Menlo Park CA, US Yingjian Chen - Fremont CA, US Jing Zhang - San Jose CA, US Heng Gong - Layton UT, US
Assignee:
Western Digital (Fremont), Inc. - Lake Forest CA
International Classification:
G11B005/39
US Classification:
360319
Abstract:
Side shield structures magnetically shielding a read sensor to block side reading of tracks on a magnetic media. The read heads include bottom and top magnetic shield layers, a read sensor or magnetically sensitive element between the bottom and top magnetic shield layers, and a side shield assembly formed of magnetically shielding material positioned between the bottom and top magnetic shield layers and adjacent at least a portion of the read sensor. In current-in-plane embodiments, the side shield assembly includes a pair of side shields of magnetically shielding material adjacent a lower portion of the read sensor formed on a lower read gap. In current-perpendicular-to-plane embodiments, the side shield assembly includes a pair of side shields extending from the bottom magnetic shield adjacent lower sides of the read sensor and/or a pair of side shields extending from the top magnetic shield adjacent upper sides of the read sensor.
Patterned Template With 1Xn Nucleation Site To Grain Growth For Uniform Grain Size Recording Media
Shuaigang Xiao - Fremont CA, US Thomas Young Chang - Menlo Park CA, US Yingguo Peng - San Ramon CA, US David Kuo - Palo Alto CA, US Kaizhong Gao - Eden Prairie MN, US Thomas Patrick Nolan - Fremont CA, US Ganping Ju - Pleasanton CA, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/66
US Classification:
428831, 360131, 4288312
Abstract:
A perpendicular magnetic media includes a substrate, a patterned template, a seed layer and a magnetic layer. The patterned template is formed on the substrate and includes a plurality of growth sites that are evenly spaced apart from each other. The seed layer is formed over the patterned template and the exposed areas of the substrate. Magnetic material is sputter deposited onto the seed layer with one grain of the magnetic material nucleated over each of the growth sites. The grain size distribution of the magnetic material is reduced by controlling the locations of the growth sites which optimizes the performance of the perpendicular magnetic media.

Abstract:
Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with document relevancy are described. One example method includes receiving one or more query terms from a query on stored documents. A relevancy operator is run on a document clump that applies more than one type of matching operation between the query terms and the document clump in a single pass. The relevancy operator may also apply at least one heuristic on the document clump in a single pass. A document's relevancy to the query is predicted based, at least in part, on an output of the relevancy operator.

Abstract:
An implantable or wearable kidney enclosure that is cylindrical, ovoid, or otherwise non-angular e.g., not rectangular or cuboid), having a circular or oval hemofilter that provides a blood flow pattern from an internal, central artery source radially outwards. Due to the efficient flow of the circular filter design, the enclosure can be made in a cylindrical low profile shape, resulting in a compact enclosure highly suitable for implantable and wearable dialysis applications.
Method To Fabricate A Nanochannel For Dna Sequencing Based On Narrow Trench Patterning Process

International Classification:

Abstract:
Apparatus and methods relating to DNA sequencing are provided. In one embodiment, a DNA sequencing device includes a nanochannel having a width that is approximately 0.3 nm to approximately 20 nm. A pair of electrodes having portions exposed to the nanochannel may form a tunneling current electrode (TCE) with an electrode gap of approximately 0.1 nm to approximately 2 nm, and more particularly about 0.3 nm to about 1 nm. In one embodiment, at least one of the pair of electrodes is formed as a suspended electrode. An actuator may be associated with the suspended electrode to displace it relative to the other electrode. In various embodiments, the nanochannel and/or the electrodes may be formed using thermal reflow processes to reduce the size of such features.
