  • Irrigation Sheath

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20020198520, Dec 26, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jun 20, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/886754
  • Inventors:
Thomas Coen - Pleasanton CA, US
Katie Messing - San Jose CA, US
Dorin Panescu - San Jose CA, US
David Swanson - Campbell CA, US
Miriam Taimisto - San Jose CA, US
  • Assignee:
    Scimed Life Systems, Inc.
  • International Classification:
    A61B018/18
  • US Classification:
    606/041000
  • Abstract:
A medical system for performing a tissue ablation procedure comprises a guide sheath and an ablation catheter disposed within an internal lumen of the catheter. The guide sheath has a distal end that includes irrigation exit ports that are configured to perfuse irrigation fluid in a distal direction over the ablation electrode of the catheter when the distal end of the catheter protrudes from the guide sheath. In this manner, the ablation electrode can be advantageously cooled during the tissue ablation process, thereby maximizing the size and depth of the ablation lesion and reducing the duration of the ablation process.

    57796467, Jul 14, 1998
  • Filed:
    Aug 27, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/918913
  • Inventors:
Josef V. Koblish - Framingham MA
Thomas T. Coen - Westboro MA
George J. Klein - London, CA
  • Assignee:
E.P. Technologies Inc. - San Jose CA
  • International Classification:
    A61B 500
  • US Classification:
    600567
  • Abstract:
A deflectable biopsy catheter for obtaining a tissue sample from a body cavity of a patient comprising: an axially elongated catheter shaft having proximal and distal portions respectively terminating at proximal and distal ends, the catheter shaft being sized and constructed to be advanced into a body cavity of a patient; a deflection wire coupled to the distal portion of the catheter shaft and extending within the catheter to the proximal end thereof; and a pair of biopsy jaws coupled to the distal end of the catheter shaft and having first and second opposed free cutting surfaces exposable for contact with a selected area of tissue within the patient's body cavity and movable with respect to each other to cut a tissue sample from the selected area of tissue. Schemes for obtaining samples from body cavities (e. g. , the gastrointestinal tract, the heart, the intestines, the uterus, the muscles, the bile duct, and the esophagus) are disclosed.
  • Bidirectional Steerable Catheter With Deflectable Distal Tip

    view source
  • US Patent:
    59065907, May 25, 1999
  • Filed:
    Jun 12, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/873483
  • Inventors:
Kulbir Singh Hunjan - Woburn MA
Josef V. Koblish - Sunnyvale CA
Thomas P. Coen - Pleasanton CA
  • Assignee:
EP Technologies, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
  • International Classification:
    A61M 3700
  • US Classification:
    604 95
  • Abstract:
A bidirectional catheter with a deflectable tip at a distal end includes a handle at a proximal end and a tubular member extending between the tip and the handle. The handle includes a first piston member slidably mounted in a handle base with proximal ends of steering wires secured in the handle. The steering wires extend through the tubular member with respective distal ends thereof secured to circumferentially spaced portions of the distal end tip. Axial displacement of the piston member in a second direction conversely urges deflection of the distal end tip in a second direction by tensioning the other wire relative to the first wire. The piston member can include another piston member slidable in the first piston member with the proximal ends of the steering wires secured in the first mentioned piston member and the handle member, respectively, and with the other piston member supporting a proximal end of the tubular member.
