Abstract:
An apparatus or corresponding method of managing Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines in a Passive Optical Network (PON) to prevent an alarm system from generating an alarm during a software upgrade or maintenance of an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), Optical Line Terminal (OLT), or PON while maintaining the effectiveness of the alarm system. The ONT may store data related to a POTS line in nonvolatile memory. The ONT may activate the POTS line based on the data from the nonvolatile memory in an event of interruption in communications with an OLT prior to reestablishing communications with the OLT. The interruption in communications may be caused by an ONT reboot to complete an installation of a software upgrade. The ONT may energize the POTS line with a voltage in response to activating the POTS line to prevent the alarm system from generating the alarm.

Abstract:
A video overlay system for a Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) optical network. The video overlay is achieved by including a video router with a gigabit Ethernet interface including Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) multicasting capability in a headend. The video router transmits unidirectional Internet Protocol video to a plurality of Single Family Unit (SFU) Optical Network Terminations (ONTs) at 1550 nm. The SFU ONTs include IGMP snooping (MxU ONT with multicasting) capability and carry bi-directional control signals from Set Top Boxes (STBs) using 1490 nm downstream and 1310 nm upstream traffic to the headend via an Optical Line Termination (OLT).

Abstract:
A method of ensuring continuous receipt of video services based on certain conditions in a passive optical network (PON) is provided. The method includes (i) detecting at a PON element a condition indicating a change of states in receipt of video services, (ii) starting a timing mechanism having a default value stored in the PON element, and (iii) enabling receipt of video services at the PON element for an amount of time defined by the default value. The receipt of video services may be disabled after the amount of time defined by the default value.

Abstract:
Managing optical network alarms and events reported by multiple network nodes is described. In some embodiments, alarms or events of the same, similar, or different types are monitored and consolidated into a consolidated alarm or event. The consolidated alarms or events may be forwarded to another network node. An alarm or event storm in an optical network or other type of network can be significantly reduced, resulting in less consumption of network resources and simplified operation for a service provider. Details of the alarm storm can be retrieved on an as-needed basis.

Abstract:
An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) simulator is provided. The ONT simulator includes one or more partially functional ONTs coupled to an Optical Line Termination (OLT) and an ONT/Optical network termination Management and Control Interface (ONT/OMCI) simulation utility. The ONTs receive test network traffic from the OLT and forward any OMCI traffic contained in the network traffic to the ONT/OMCI simulation utility. The ONT/OMCI simulation utility in turn simulates the operation of field-deployable ONT using the OMCI traffic.
According to an example, a method for virtual computing resource orchestration includes receiving environmental data related to an operational characteristic of a compute resource for hosting a virtual machine (VM), receiving VM data related to an operational characteristic of the VM, and determining if the environmental data or the VM data violate predetermined threshold values respectively related to the environmental data and the VM data. The method further includes generating an event based on violation of one of the threshold values by the environmental data or the VM data, evaluating, by a processor, a rule to determine an action based on the violation of one of the threshold values, and executing the action to modify the operational characteristic of the compute resource or the operational characteristic of the VM.
