Abstract:

An apparatus for providing a continuous supply of web material to a web printer or other system. The web material is fed from a first roll supported in a feed position, and when the first roll is near depletion, the leading end of a second roll is adhesively connected to the web of the first roll with that web then being severed. One belt drive means is employed for rotating both the forward and rearward rolls so that these achieve the same speed for the connecting and severing operations. The belt drive means are connected to the press drive through control means which vary the belt drive speed in accordance with the tension of the web. An indexing conveyor supports forward and rearward rolls to locate the rolls in the forward and rearward running positions and in intermediate positions for connecting and severing of the web material and for loading of new rolls into the system.

Abstract:

There is provided a composition comprising tannin containing hydroxyl groups which has been (a) chemically modified by reaction of at least one of said hydroxyl groups with at least one member selected from the group consisting of an esterification agent (e. g. acetic anhydride), etherification agent (e. g. dichloromethane or quaternary organic amine such as N-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride) to form the corresponding ester, or ether, through said hydroxyl group, and (b) derivatized. The chemically modified tannin is derivatized by reaction with aldehyhde (e. g. formaldehyde), or aldehyde and at least one member selected from the group consisting of ammonia and organic amine containing at least one primary or secondary nitrogen (e. g. cyclohexyl amine); said derivatized tannin being water soluble or dispersable at a pH below 7 and water insoluble at a pH above 7. The above modified tannins are useful for the coagulation and/or detackification of solid particles suspended in an aqueous system, such as paint particles suspended in the waste water of a paint spray booth operation.

A composition and method of treating paint spray booth water to detackify organic solvent based paint particles. The composition comprises a melamine polymer obtained from the reaction of melamine, aldehyde and an amine selected from the group consisting of dicyandiamide and glycine. These melamine polymers may be used in combination with a polyacrylamide, which combination exhibits surprising and unexpected effects when used to detackify organic solvent paint particles.

Abstract:

A web aligning apparatus is disclosed wherein a web path correcting tilt frame is mounted for tilting movement between the laterally spaced side plates of the tilt frame support structure. The tilt frame includes a pair of laterally spaced frame members which extend generally longitudinally of the path of travel of the web through the apparatus and which rotatably support a pair of steering rollers therebetween. The axes of the steering rollers extend generally transversely to the path of travel of the web through the apparatus. A pair of elongated links respectively connect the tilt frame members with the support structure side plates and are arranged so that the instantaneous center of rotation of the tilt frame is located outside the perimeter of the tilt frame and shifts along an arcuate path that extends laterally of the path of travel of the web with tilting movements of the tilt frame.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a novel method for coagulating waterborne paints in paint spray booth recirculating water. The coagulant aid comprises a polynucleate hydroxy silicate-sulphate compound (hereinafter PASS) having the following average composition of the general formula: Al(OH). sub. B (SO. sub. 4). sub. C (SiO. sub. X). sub. D (H. sub. 2 O). sub. E wherein B ranges from 0. 75 to 2. 0; C ranges from 0. 30 to 1. 12; D ranges from 0. 005 to 0. 1; X is greater than 2. 0 but less or equal to 4. 0 such that 3=B+2C+2D(X-2) E is 1. 5 to 4 when the product is in solid form; and E is larger than 4 when the product is in aqueous form, which may optionally be used together with alum or a mixture of alum and a polyamine. The coagulant aids of this invention may also be used advantageously with detackifying agents to simultaneously detackify and coagulate solvent based paint particles.

Abstract:

A transmission system is provided for differential speed control. An endless, resilient member in the form of an endless belt is driven by an input pulley. The speed differential is derived by using the input speed taken from one effective radius of the resilient element and picking the output speed from a different effective radius of the resilient element, with the different effective radii being variably selectable. Thus an output pulley has its periphery in contact with the resilient member and a control carriage coupled to the resilient member is operative to vary the curvature of the resilient member with respect to the periphery of the output pulley. In this manner, the neutral axis of the resilient member is varied to control the speed of the surface of the resilient member that is contacting the periphery of the output pulley.
