Abstract:

A vehicle electrical system for supplying a first load with a first direct current voltage and for supplying a second load with a second direct current voltage lower than the first direct current voltage is disclosed. The vehicle electrical system includes: a multiphase alternating current generator having star-connected armature windings with respective phase winding terminations and a common center connection point wherein the generator generates a first higher alternating current voltage output at the respective phase winding terminations and a second lower alternating current voltage output at the common center connection point; a first rectifier unit electrically connected between the respective phase winding terminations and a first energy storage device and a first load for full-wave rectifying the first alternating current voltage output to be supplied to the first energy storage device and the first load; a second rectifier unit electrically connected in a circuit path between the common center connection point and a second energy storage device and a second load for rectifying the second alternating current voltage output to be supplied to the second energy storage device and the second load; and a controller electrically connected to the second rectifier unit, the second energy storage device and the common center connection point, the controller being operable to sense a voltage output level of the second alternating current voltage output and to selectively enable and disable the second rectifier unit to allow or block current flow through the circuit path between the common center connection point and the second energy storage device and the second load in response to the sensed voltage output level.

Abstract:

A battery system includes a battery with a pair of terminals extending from one side of the battery case, and a tray-like battery holder. The terminals have hollow sockets inserted therein which are engaged by posts extending from conductive plugs that extend through an end wall of the holder. A threaded connection is formed in the plug and opens to the outside of the holder. Alignment posts are formed in the holder to be disposed within cylindrical wells in the bottom of the battery case and ensure proper alignment of the battery in the holder. A hinged latch is formed in the holder and engages a projection on the battery case. When in place in the holder, the battery case rests on resilient pads located on a floor of the holder.

Abstract:

A battery system for use in a vehicle is disclosed having a first battery for selectively powering the motor to start the engine, and having a first voltage level and a charge level. The system includes a second battery to operate and maintain the accessory electrical loads, and having a second voltage level. The system includes a charging switch coupling the first battery to the alternator. The system also includes a charge maintenance device coupling the first battery to the second battery to maintain the charge level of the first battery to a predefined magnitude in response to a control signal. The system also includes a controller coupled to both the first battery and the second battery to monitor the first voltage level and the second voltage level, and operating the charging switch and the charge maintenance device in response to the first voltage level and the second voltage level.

Abstract:

An improved vent cap system for use in an electrochemical battery is provided which includes a ring flange for forming a ring seal between the vent cap assembly and the fill tube. When the vent cap assembly is positioned in the battery housing, the ring flange and the fill tube deform to create a seal therebetween to provide a fluid tight seal.

Abstract:

A battery monitoring system is disclosed. The system comprises a means for acquiring a value representative of a first period of time during which the battery will deliver a sufficient amount of power. The system also comprises a means for measuring a set of parameters comprising a voltage of the battery and a temperature of the battery during a second period of time. The system also comprises a means for predicting whether the battery will deliver the sufficient amount of power during a third period of time less than the first period of time. An output signal is provided if the means for predicting determines that the battery will deliver the sufficient amount of power during the third period of time. A system for determining whether a battery for a vehicle will deliver a sufficient amount of power for a sufficient amount of time is also disclosed.

Abstract:

A radial piston engine is disclosed wherein power is transferred such that the power take-off is truly balanced, where the piston runs truly parallel to the cylinder walls. This concept reduces wear of the cylinders and piston rings. The engine provides improved gas mileage due to the reduced piston drag. One unique feature is the power take-off from the piston to the flywheels. The design takes power from inside the cylinder compartment, through four transfer arms, to cams that in turn transfer the power to two flywheels. By firing complimentary cylinders 180 degrees at the same time, almost no vibration is noticed. Also, since the cylinders can fire many times per flywheel rotation, the torque which this engine produces is greater other designs. Any number of cylinders is possible. Single cylinders and two cylinder designs with chain power take-offs are also possible for lawnmowers and motorcycles.
