Abstract:

A magnetically controllable, or guided, ferrocarbon particle composition and methods of use and production are disclosed. The composition may optionally carry biologically active substances that have been adsorbed onto the particle. The composition comprises composite, volume-compounded particles of 0. 1 to 5. 0 m in size, and preferably between 0. 5 and 5. 0 m, containing 1. 0 to 95. 0% by mass of carbon, and preferably from about 20% to about 60%. The particles may be produced by mechanical milling of a mixture of iron and carbon powders. The obtained particles are optionally placed in a solution of a biologically active substance to adsorb the substance onto the particles. The composition is generally administered in suspension.

Abstract:

A magnet keeper-shield assembly adapted to hold and store a permanent magnet used to generate a high gradient magnetic field that, in one embodiment, may penetrate into deep targeted tumor sites in order to attract magnetically responsive micro-carriers. The magnet keeper-shield assembly includes a magnetically permeable keeper-shield with a bore dimensioned to hold the magnet. A lever mechanism is used to push the magnet partially out of the keeper-shield. The actuator is assisted by several springs extending through the base of the keeper-shield.

Abstract:

Certain magnetic compositions may be used successfully for injection, followed by the application of an externally placed magnetic field that guides the particles to the targeted site, such as tissues, cells or cell components. The particles are extravasated into the targeted tissue, affording better localized distribution of the particles throughout the targeted tissue and to deeper target tissue sites. The relatively small size of the particles yields a more uniform radiative therapy, while utilizing smaller total particle mass for the procedure.

Abstract:

An installation for utilizing solar energy for heating air and delivering heated air to a building or the like includes a solar heat collector, a heat storage unit, a blower for producing the desired air flow and ducting connecting the components to permit operation in various modes. A unitary controller is provided in the form of an enclosure containing a blower and having three air flow ports. Ducting extends between the first port and the collector, between the second port and the heat storage unit, between the third port and the building, and between the building, heat storage unit, and collector. Flow control and directing means unitized within the enclosure establish three different air transport loops through the blower for three different heat transfer modes. A first loop connects the blower, storage unit and collector to deliver heat from the collector to the storage unit. A second loop connects the blower, building and collector to deliver heat from the collector to the building.
