Back Support Control Mechanism For A Chair Or The Like
A back support control mechanism for a chair or the like is provided for a back support movable toward and away form a seat. Adjustable positioning of the back support with respect to the seat in an infinite number of positions in a range of movement of the back support is provided through use of a channel member fixed with respect to the seat and a pressure pad positioned within the channel member and fixed with respect to the back support. The pressure pad slides within the channel member, and a lever is coupled to the pressure pad through a spring plate. The lever is movable with the pressure pad and with respect thereto, and has a cam surface thereon which, in one position of the lever with respect to the pressure pad, bears against the pressure pad through the spring plate, causing the pressure pad to bear against the channel member to fix the pressure pad in position with respect to the channel member and to prevent further movement of the pressure pad, thereby to fix the position of the back support with respect to the seat. A stop pin is carried by the channel member which extends into a slot in the pressure pad. A terminal end of the slot limits the range of movement of the back support with respect to the seat.
A reclining chair having a seat portion connected pivotally at its forward end includes an arm compressible with progressive resistance to support the rear of the seat portion. The compressible arm is arranged to form with the seat portion an angle which continually decreases as the chair is reclined, and continually increases as the chair is returned to its upright position. In one embodiment, the compressible arm travels through a horizontal position so that it may be kept as close as possible to the horizontal at all times.

Abstract:
An adjustable footrest for use on a chair to comfortably accommodate the feet of a user. Defined on the underside of the mounting plate is an elongated hollow housing which receives the essential moving elements of the footrest mechanism. Positioned within the hollow housing is a gas cylinder that contains an actuator pin located on a piston at the upper end of the cylinder. Located near the bottom of the hollow housing is a pair of outwardly projecting legs to which is pivotally mounted an elongated leg. A portion of the leg is positioned within the housing and is pivotally mounted to the connection end of the gas cylinder. The other end of the leg extends away from the hollow housing and terminates in a tranversely positioned footrest. Pulling the handle in an upward direction presses the actuator pin within the gas cylinder, thus releasing the piston. While the user maintains the handle in its top position, the user may then exert a downward force on the footrest.
