Abstract:
A system and a method for controlling engine torque in an internal combustion with a randomly operable intake valve and a selectable intake valve is disclosed in which torque is controlled via a throttle valve when the randomly operable intake valve is deactivated and via intake valve closing time of the randomly operable intake valve when the selectable intake valve is deactivated.

Abstract:
A method and system for controlling intake valves in an internal combustion with intake valves operated by more than one type of actuation device includes defining operating modes of the intake valve and mapping these onto engine torque and engine speed operating regions. Torque control within regions and steps to accomplish smooth transitions among regions are defined.

Abstract:
A fuel vapor recovery method and system are disclosed for an engine with a hybrid valvetrain, in which the intake valves are actuated by more than one type of device. Normal fuel vapor recovery purging relies on a depression in intake manifold pressure to cause the flow of purge gases through the fuel vapor recovery system and into the intake manifold. As the hybrid valvetrain engine is unthrottled over much of the engine operating map, purging the fuel vapor recovery system requires decreasing the intake manifold pressure to allow a purge condition. Making a transition to a condition with a depressed manifold pressure is the subject herein.
