Abstract:

Communication between a plurality of data terminals (101(1) to 101(b)) serially interconnected with a main terminal (102) is provided by data frames or packets having a data portion for accommodating a burst of data preceeded by a header portion for accommodating address data followed by an empty/full "flag" bit indicating whether the addressee station has withdrawn the data burst. If a terminal has a data burst to send, it locates an empty packet, inserts the addressee designation in the packet subsequent to any prior address that the packet might contain, interposes delay in the passage therethrough of the packet so that the duration is increased to accommodate the new address and overwrites the data burst into the data portion. The main terminal detects when the data burst is withdrawn and signals the originating terminal to remove the data delay.

Abstract:

An addressing arrangement is disclosed for systems in which communication is required between a main device and a plurality of associate devices. In the arrangement, access messages are used corresponding to states of shift register sequences. When the main device issues an access message, each associate device transforms the received access message to another access message which is applied to a subsequent associate device. The transformation of access messages allows the associate devices to be identical to each other and respond to the same predetermined access message since each device is uniquely identified by its location in the system. Each associate device also has the capability of being accessed by a prescribed access message which is not transformed by the associate device as it propagates through the system. Variation of the extent and the direction of transformation in another arrangement provides a means of uniquely identifying the source of information transmitted from an associate device to the main device.

Abstract:

A versatile loop communication system is disclosed wherein recurring frames of the ring carrier signal are divided by a movable partition into a dynamically allocated time division channel portion and a data packet communication portion. A common signal channel, in the ring carrier frame, is used to logically connect and disconnect stations for either circuit or packet communication on a common bus extending from terminals located in the loop. The loop controller automatically forms a contiguous group of time division channels or signal bytes at one end of the ring carrier frame. The format of the time division multiplexing channels is such that dynamic time slot interchanges of signal bytes are produced by the controller without the necessity of counting circuitry in the terminals to identify specific channel locations. The dynamic time slot interchange or byte displacement function is provided by additional memory arrangements both for the signals being transported by the ring and control functions in the time division switch located in the controller. The remaining portion of the frame serves as a shared channel for packet header switched data.
