Abstract:

A neon gas discharge lamp is provided which produces an acceptable amber color emission for automotive applications. The red emission from the neon discharge when the lamp is operated in a pulsed mode is combined with a green emission from a substituted Y. sub. 3 Al. sub. 15 O. sub. 12 :Ce phosphor coated on the interior surface of the lamp. The resulting amber emission meets both SAE and ECE amber color requirements. In particular, phosphor has the general formula: Y. sub. 3-(a+b+c) Ce. sub. a M. sub. b V. sub. c Al. sub. 5 O. sub. 12 where M is Gd or La; V are lattice vacanies; 0. 01. ltoreq. a. ltoreq. 08; 0. 60. ltoreq. b. ltoreq. 2. 4; and 0. ltoreq. c. ltoreq. 1.

Abstract:

Manganese-arsenic coactivated zinc silicate phosphors comprising a host of substantially stoichiometric zinc silicate and characterized by enhanced brightness and persistence are prepared by a method which includes a two-step firing schedule. The initial pre-fired phosphor powder blend is formulated with an amount of silicic acid less than or equal to the amount stoichiometrically required for the formation of zinc silicate. Any excess zinc oxide remaining in the mixture following the first firing step is removed by addition of ammonium chloride and a second firing step. The resulting phosphors are substantially free of inert zinc oxide and silica which would otherwise contribute to diminished brightness and persistence.

Abstract:

A method for preventing the hydration/solubilization of the protective oxide coating of a phosphor is described. The method involves coating of the oxide coated phosphor particles with a continuous hydrophobic coating. After the phosphor particles are coated with the continuous hydrophobic coating and the continuous hydrophobic coating cured, they are added to a water-based suspension and subsequently processed into a lamp.

A fluorescent lamp containing a Y. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 or Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 coating on a layer of yttrium vanadate phosphor and a method of coating the layer of the yttrium vanadate phosphor with a continuous protective coating of Y. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 or Al. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 is described.
