  • Lubricant Refrigerant Composition For Hydrofluorocarbon (Hfc) Refrigerants

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6374629, Apr 23, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jan 25, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/236707
  • Inventors:
Jill Ellen Oberle - Brant MI
Thomas Edward Rajewski - Bay City MI
  • Assignee:
The Lubrizol Corporation - Wickliffe OH
  • International Classification:
    F25B 4302
  • US Classification:
    62473, 62471, 62502, 62192, 252 68
  • Abstract:
A lubricant-refrigerant composition contained within a compression refrigeration system is disclosed which comprises (A) at least one fluorine-containing hydrocarbon refrigerant containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, further wherein fluorine is the only halogen in said fluorine-containing hydrocarbon with the proviso that 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane is not the sole refrigerant; and (B) at least one lubricant comprising (1) a hydrocarbyl substituted arene, (2) a phosphate ester, (3) an organic ester of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol, (4) a perfluoropolyethylene, (5) an ether; (6) a polyether; (7) a polyalphaolefin; or (8) a mineral oil; wherein at a temperature of above -60Â C. a phase separation occurs such that at least two phases are formed, said phases being a refrigerant rich phase and a lubricant rich phase, further wherein the lubricant rich phase resides below the refrigerant rich phase.
  • Lubricant Composition For Ammonia Based Refrigerants With Good Seal Performance

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6677284, Jan 13, 2004
  • Filed:
    Aug 29, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/220460
  • Inventors:
    Thomas Rajewski - Auburn MI
John C. Tolfa - Midland MI
Hsinheng Li - Mt. Pleasant MI
  • Assignee:
The Lubrizol Corporation - Wickliffe OH
  • International Classification:
    C10M14536
  • US Classification:
    508579, 252 68
  • Abstract:
A problem with refrigeration systems using ammonia as the refrigerant and hydrocarbon lubricants is that the seals/gaskets of the systems have a tendency to harden and shrink. This can cause leakage of the refrigerant and eventually require disassembly of the equipment and replacement of the seals. The addition of a small amount polyether having an aromatic fragment of 6-18 carbon atoms or an aliphatic fragment of 10-22 carbon atoms can soften the seals and partially re-swell the seals solving the leakage problem and avoiding expensive maintenance costs. Alternatively a polyether of 1,2-butylene oxide which is more oil soluble than most other polyethers with a smaller Z group e. g. derived from alkanols of 1 to 9 carbon would be effective at reducing hardening and shrinkage.
