  • US Classification:
    408227, 408233, 408713
  • Abstract:
A spade drill insert and drilling tool assembly is provided wherein the lands of the spade drill insert have helical margins which provide increased stability during cutting operations. The margin may have a helical trailing side or leading side, a parallel helical margin, or may also include a gullet or flute adjacent the helical margin.
  • Drill Tool Assembly

  • US Patent:
    59576359, Sep 28, 1999
  • Filed:
    Aug 21, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/137657
  • Inventors:
Joseph P. Nuzzi - Dover OH
Timothy G. Stokey - Dover OH
  • Assignee:
Allied Machine & Engineering Corp. - Dover OH
  • International Classification:
    B23B 5100
  • US Classification:
    408231
  • Abstract:
The invention is directed at a drill tool assembly including a holder having a shank and head portion and having a axial centerline or rotational axis on which said holder is rotated in use. The head portion includes a holder slot at least over a central portion of the head, with the slot being oriented perpendicularly to the axial centerline of the holder. The holder slot also includes a locating boss extending upwardly from the bottom of the slot, which includes first and second surfaces, with at least one of the surfaces being located in a predetermined position with respect to the axial centerline of the holder, and substantially parallel to this centerline. A drill insert having first and second cutting surfaces is selectively positioned within the holder slot, and includes a locating slot adapted to be positioned in a predetermined orientation relative to the boss provided in the holder slot. Both the position of the boss and corresponding position of the drill insert and locating slot with respect to the boss are controlled by orienting the drill insert in a predetermined manner with respect to the holder to minimize offset errors in these relative positions. In the preferred embodiment, the holder and the locating dowel or boss share a common rotational axis and the drill insert is installed in the holder in a single orientation and configured so that when it is cammed into place by an offset retaining screw, the bit indexes so that the centerline or rotational axis of the bit, locating boss and holder are substantially co-linear.
  • Flat Bottom Tool

    view source
  • US Patent:
    61356816, Oct 24, 2000
  • Filed:
    Aug 21, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/137647
  • Inventors:
Joseph P. Nuzzi - Dover OH
Timothy G. Stokey - Dover OH
William H. Stokey - New Philadelphia OH
  • Assignee:
Allied Machine & Engineering - Dover OH
  • International Classification:
    B23B 5100
  • US Classification:
    408227
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a drilling system for cutting flat bottomed holes in work pieces. The tool has two opposing angled cutting edges extending from a rotational axis, with the inner portions of these cutting edges extending upwardly to create an overlapping web at the center. The overlapping web strengthens the center portion of the cuttings edges of the tool. The angle at which the inner portion of the cutting edge is inclined can be increased to create a center point on the cutting surface of the tool. The center point adds stability to the tool as it rotates along its longitudinal axis. The cutting edge has a rake surface with a positive rake angle that lessens the forces on the insert and also allows for better formation of chips of stock material being removed. Chip breakers can be cut into the cutting edges of the insert, further aiding in the removal of stock material.
