The management of color image data, said color image data provided in a source device color space from a source device having a source device color profile, wherein the source device color profile is accessed and used to transform the color image data from the source device color space to a color space that is both device and viewing condition independent, thereby creating device-independent color image data, after which the device-independent color image data is compressed. A color management system that transforms input image data from an input colorant space to an output colorant space using input and output device appearance transforms and a customizable gamut mapping algorithm. Data storage format for storing images with extended color gamut that is compatible with limited color gamut imaging devices includes identifying regions within the color image that contain extended gamut color values, using a compact notation to store an identification of each extended color gamut region in a second section, gamut-mapping the image data pertaining to the extended gamut regions to a limited gamut color space, storing the gamut-mapped image data together with all image data not in an extended gamut region in a first section of the data storage format, and storing image data for the extended gamut regions in an extended gamut color space in a third section of the data storage format such that the limited color gamut image stored in the first section can be combined with the extended gamut data stored in the third section to produce an extended color gamut digital image.
A metamerism-reducing color transformation in which a color value in a perceptual color space is mapped to a corresponding color value in a device dependent color space. Multiple different inverse transforms are applied to the color value in the perceptual color space, one each for respective ones of multiple different viewing conditions such as different viewing illuminants or different surround, thereby resulting in plural different target color values in a viewing condition dependent space. The plural different target color values in the viewing condition dependent space are subjected to regression analysis based on a spectral model of reflectance of device colors so as to calculate to a single color coordinate in device dependent coordinates that best fits the plural different target color values in the viewing condition dependent space. The regression analysis may be a weighted regression analysis. Because the color value in the destination device dependent color space is obtained through best-fit regression analysis of plural different target color values corresponding to multiple different viewing conditions, metameric shifts in the color's appearance due to changes in viewing condition are significantly reduced as compared to transformations which obtain values accurate only for a single viewing condition.
